A Washington State dog who spent a decade chained up finally found the strength and courage to break his chain – but then he had to beat the odds at the shelter, too. Purple Heart Rescue posted on its Facebook page today that a dog named Trooper recently found his “earth angel” after a lifetime of suffering – and now things are finally starting to look up for this senior dog.
Purple Heart’s Facebook post stated: “My name is Trooper…My life has been spent on a chain. I am about 10 years old now. Well, I made my escape and it worked. My neighbor (my earth angel) has been worried about me and hasn’t had any luck in getting me help. After my escape, she took me to the shelter. Legally she could not keep me, so she did the right thing.”
As Trooper spent his week at the shelter, his rescuer continued to think about him. When she contacted the shelter, she was notified that Trooper was going to be euthanized because he “wasn’t adoptable” – but she disagreed with this assessment and adopted the hard-luck pup to save his life. After ten years on a chain, Trooper’s new mom saved him twice – and now he only has sunny days ahead.
After contacting Purple Heart Rescue, Trooper’s new mom ensured that the senior dog received plenty of food, love, and care. After years of neglect, Trooper’s nails and skin were in poor condition, but he has been assured that he’ll never have to worry about this again. Trooper even received his first bath, and according to Purple Heart’s Facebook post, “I did really well…” but “I am embarrassed to say, that I sort of stunk too.”
Now that Trooper’s belly is full and his coat is clean, he has started to receive veterinary care, as well. But after so many years of neglect, he’ll need a lot of help to ensure that he’s healthy. Purple Heart Rescue will be helping Trooper with his medical care and is accepting donations toward his veterinary bills.
Trooper spent a decade on a chain, one scary week in the shelter, and now, thanks to a vigilant rescuer and a dedicated organization, he will live out his days with love, compassion, and care. The Facebook post added: “I heard my mom talking to the lady at Purple Heart, boy are they determined to get me well so that I can have a great life!”
No dog should have to live a lifetime on a chain. Thank you, Purple Heart Rescue, for helping this dog – and thank you to Trooper’s Mom for not allowing this senior to be euthanized after a lifetime of neglect. May Trooper have many happy, healthy, loving years ahead of him.
