‘The Witch’s Familiar’ is the September 26 episode of ‘Doctor Who’ and we get to see the Doctor have a bit of fun, so to speak. ‘Doctor Who’ airs on BBC America at 9 p.m. eastern standard time on Saturday nights.
The episode opens up with Clara hanging upside down, still on planet Skaro, with Missy telling her a story about the Doctor, which is a way to let the audience know how she and Clara escaped. This was a very clever way to also explain Missy’s escape each time they thought she was dead.
The Doctor is upset over Clara and Missy grabs a gun, an uncommon sight, and the Doctor takes Davros’ chair and makes it back to the area where his Tardis, Clara and Missy were destroyed. The Doctor shows off a bit and somehow when the Daleks attempt to destroy him he is shielded. He continues to taunt the Daleks until Kolonysav’s snakes overtake him.
Meanwhile both Missy and Clara are in the sewers where we learn that this is the place old Daleks go to decay. Missy uses Clara as bait to bring down a Dalek, which is destroyed by slime Daleks, and makes Clara get in the now empty Dalek suit.
The Doctor is back with Davros and they continue to talk, and at one point the Doctor let’s Davros know that Gallifrey is back. Davros also lets the Doctor know that he is connected to all the Daleks on Skaro. Davros has finally convinced the Doctor that he is helpless, that he somehow has changed as he opens up his eyes and cries over the Doctors news that his people are back. The Doctor is so moved by what he sees, helps Davros see the world one more time by unleashing some Time Lord magic; however it was nothing but a clever ruse as Davros wanted the Doctor to rejuvenate him and his Daleks.
Clara, now in a Dalek, and Missy are taken back to the Supreme Dalek who is ready to exterminate Missy, as she insults them and just being Missy, when the Daleks suddenly stopped and then a golden light surrounds all of them. Missy knows what is going on, and she runs off and leaves Clara.
The Doctor is in a trap that is using his Time Lord Regeneration Energy to reenergize Davros and the Daleks. Missy comes along and frees him, and Davros thinks that he has won, but he seemed to have forgotten his decaying, sludge Daleks who are also energized and are out for revenge.
Missy and the Doctor run off only to confront another Dalek, who Missy knows is Clara but is trying to convince the Doctor otherwise, until the Dalek says something that prompts the Doctor to tell the Dalek to open its body. He sees that it is Clara and he tell Missy to run.
The Doctor and Clara run back to where the Tardis was destroyed and we realize that the blue box was not truly destroyed just out of phase for a bit and as the Daleks try to destroy them again the Tardis reforms and they get out of Dodge.
The Doctor goes back to Davros as a boy and instead of destroying the boy he destroys the hand mines and helps Davros home.
Another great episode where the Doctor is always two steps ahead of everyone else, and we even get to see this as Missy explains to Clara how they got out of the Dalek compound alive.
It was also nice to see what happens to Daleks that get older, since they seem to be almost immortal. This was an interesting way for the audience to find out especially with Missy as narrator.
There were also some funny lines throughout that almost seemed to poke fun at the audience, especially when we see the Doctor unharmed while in Davros’ chair sipping tea. He almost seems to break the forth wall by saying that he has the tea because he is the Doctor. That was probably because in these episodes things happen that has the audience question as to why and this little scene explained the only answer is that he is the Doctor that’s why.
Overall this season is shaping up to be excellent. What did you think of this episode?
