A heartbroken dog owner who found out his 15-year-old dog was terminally ill decided to make the best of the time the two would have together and embarked upon a coast to coast adventure.
Thomas Neil Rodriguez, known as DJ, adopted his dog in 1999 from an animal shelter when the puppy was barely eight-weeks-old. Earlier this year, veterinarians delivered the bad news. Poh, the dog had two “inoperable tumors” in his abdomen.
Although DJ was devastated at the news, he decided to make a cross country adventure, enjoy the time left with his dog and document Poh’s bucket list via Instagram.
The adventure began in March. DJ, his fiancee and Poh left their Queens, New York home and traveled by car to Baltimore, Maryland where Poh slept in his own queen sized bed. From there the family headed to Nashville and Memphis where the dog indulged in barbecue food and paid tribute to Elvis Presley.
For the next seven weeks, they covered 35 U.S. cities, traveling over 12,000 miles. DJ procured a green “buggy” to use when Poh was tired or not feeling well.
When Poh became too ill to continue his trip, the family returned home. DJ has since been making the dog’s life as comfortable as he can.
According to ABCNews, they tried to take in as many landmarks as possible:
“We even stopped by Walter White’s house in New Mexico. We went to ‘The Goonies’ house in Oregon. There was some dog parks to go to. In Austin we went to a great dog park where he actually swam. It was a little bit for him, a little bit for me,” stated DJ.
Since documenting Poh’s bucket list, DJ has more than 3,000 followers on Instagram:
“My life is kind of hectic. I’m always traveling, but Poh is my home, my child. I think this resonated with a lot of dog owners. They wish they could do stuff like this with their dog and spend these moments, but sometimes life gets in the way.”
“I am super blessed that I have actually gotten to do this. People think I take care of Poh, but Poh takes care of me.”
And if you’re wondering if Poh loved his trip, well … we are certain he did. On his Instagram photos, Poh’s thoughts were included:
“People often wonder if I get tired or sad on this trip. Only time I’m really upset is when my parents have to leave me :( when I have to stay in the car by myself I hate it, and I always let my parent know when they get back by whimpering… Hehe suckers :) so even if I look tired, I love it when they bring me site seeing. I just ride along in my cart and enjoy the sites.”
