Balboa Park in San Diego is one of the best places to enjoy with your dog- whether as a local or a visitor. We’ve already highlighted where to walk and explore on the West Side of the park. With all the exploring to do, it’s no doubt that you and your dog will work up an appetite.
Dining with your dog in the park yields a plethora of options well suited for all appetites and attention spans. Most of the restaurants inside the park have outdoor seating and therefore welcome pets to join their owners.
The Prado at Balboa Park is located directly adjacent to the Visitor Center has limited dog friendly seating on the front terrace patio. This patio, part of the lounge, serves lighter fare only, but offers two different Happy Hours Tuesday through Friday, one early and one late. Featured menu items on the lounge menu include Black Bean or Chicken Tortilla soup, salads, and a selection of flatbreads and Mahi Mahi tacos.
Across the courtyard from is Panama 66 located in the San Diego Museum of Art’s Sculture Garden. Dogs are welcome to join their owners for a pint of local craft beer at the tables next to the grassy spot near sculptures- offering blankets for use if you need them! San Diego resident Laurie Shandley-who frequents the location with her dog Logan says the tasty food, extensive drink selection and atmosphere keep her coming back. “It’s really a cool venue. The view of the tower from there is gorgeous, especially at night.”
Lunch spots to consider include the Japanese Tea Pavilion next to the Japanese Friendship Garden. While dogs are not allowed inside the garden’s grounds, they are welcome to join you as you have a noodle bowl, tea, or sushi at the patio. It’s even open on select evenings.
Lady Carolyn’s Pub is The Old Globe Theatre’s outdoor dog friendly food and beverage pavilion offering up soups in bread bowls, salads, and assorted drinks and beverages. Hours are based on show performance dates and times.
For dogs and their people needing quick and most casual dining options, the park also features the Village Grill, (at the corner of Village Place and Old Globe Way) where humans and their dogs can enjoy fast food items made on site while dining at tile decorated tables with umbrellas. There are also a variety of snack carts offering anything from pretzels, popcorn, ice cream, and nachos. Hours vary with longer hours in the summer months.
