A satanic statue has been revealed in Detroit at a private location Saturday. The giant bronze statue – a symbol of the modern Satanist movement – was created and unveiled at a ticketed event inside an industrial building located near the Detroit River. Community protests pushed the unveiling to a different venue, but the ceremony was still held – complete with bare chested candle holders, Goth bands, upside down crucifixes and cheers of “Hail Satan!”
Writes Fox News: “A crowd of several hundred gathered Saturday night to see Detroit’s newest resident: A 9-foot, 2,000-pound statue of a goat-headed occult idol named Baphomet. The Satanic Temple unveiled the bronze figure to an estimated 700 attendees at an undisclosed location. The group’s initial venue canceled after local religious groups protested.”
The common, goat-headed winged representation of Baphomet was created in 1861 by the French occultist Eliphas Levi.
Levi, in his book Dogmes et Rituels de la Haute Magie (Dogmas and Rituals of High Magic), explains the multiple symbols in the image:
The goat on the frontispiece carries the sign of the pentagram on the forehead, with one point at the top, a symbol of light, his two hands forming the sign of Hermeticism, the one pointing up to the white moon of Chesed, the other pointing down to the black one of Geburah. This sign expresses the perfect harmony of mercy with justice. His one arm is female, the other male like the ones of the androgyn of Khunrath, the attributes of which we had to unite with those of our goat because he is one and the same symbol.
The flame of intelligence shining between his horns is the magic light of the universal balance, the image of the soul elevated above matter, as the flame, whilst being tied to matter, shines above it. The ugly beast’s head expresses the horror of the sinner, whose materially acting, solely responsible part has to bear the punishment exclusively; because the soul is insensitive according to its nature and can only suffer when it materializes. The rod standing instead of genitals symbolizes eternal life, the body covered with scales the water, the semi-circle above it the atmosphere, the feathers following above the volatile. Humanity is represented by the two breasts and the androgyn arms of this sphinx of the occult sciences.
In most pictures, Baphomet’s arms bear the Latin words SOLVE (separate) and COAGULA (join together), illustrating the fact that the power to “bind and loose” was usurped from Almighty God by the Devil.
Jex Blackmore, the director of the Satanic Temple of Detroit, claims that Satanists are “completely misunderstood,” and said that “Satanism and the term ‘Satanic’ has been used a political tool to demonize individuals who have rebelled against systems of authority and power.”
Blackmore says The Satanic Temple of Detroit is a non-theistic group that does not worship the Christian antithesis of God – Satan the Devil as described in the Bible as God’s adversary.
The group’s website defines Satan as “a symbol of man’s inherent nature, representative of the eternal rebel, enlightened inquiry and personal freedom rather than a supernatural deity or being.”
According to the site, the mission of The Satanic Temple is to “encourage benevolence and empathy among all people, reject tyrannical authority, advocate practical common sense and justice, and be directed by the human conscience to undertake noble pursuits guided by the individual will.”
Blackmore said the statue’s unveiling – which was initially set to occur at Bert’s Market Place in Detroit’s Eastern Market until the owners realized who had booked the space and returned the deposit – was briefly interrupted by about 100 protestors.
“Protesters arrived for a short time at our first ticketing location, but retreated after only about 30 minutes,” Blackmore said. “One woman attempted to block the event entrance and was removed by the police in cooperation with the building’s owner. “
As far as where Baphomet may permanently reside?
Writes Detroit News: “Ultimately, the group hopes to have it placed permanently next to a sculpture of the Ten Commandments monument now in place near a state courthouse in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, or outside Arkansas’ Statehouse in Little Rock, where a Ten Commandments monument also is planned.”
