Wisconsin may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think about luxury vacation destinations. However, we discovered a place that proved to be the perfect city escape. A short plane ride (from NYC) into Milwaukee, and quick one hour drive north, and we arrived in Kohler, Wisconsin—a place rooted in tradition but brimming with all we look for in a modern day destination.
Named for the luxury bath and kitchen production giant, Kohler is a factory town at its roots (although you would never know that as the working factory hides quietly behind charming brick and weaving green ivy). Today, Destination Kohler is a place offering guests a first class vacation– one steeped in history, yet filled with modern amenities, friendly service and an endless array of activities.
At Kohler’s center is the esteemed American Club. Originally created as a dormitory for immigrant factory workers, today the brick Tudor is a full service hotel, offering luxury rooms and suits, fine dining options and the charm of a time past. Many of the guest rooms intermingle old and new, with décor chosen to enhance the building’s historic details, yet modern luxuries like oversized jet tubs and double showers with body sprays (Kohler of course).
Of course, no full service hotel is complete without a world class spa. The Kohler Water Spa offers the latest therapeutic water treatments, as well as a full menu of traditional spa services. The impressive relaxation pool with soothing waterfalls, and rooftop relaxation room complete with working fireplace, ensure a soothing experience around every corner.
Destination Kohler is also the perfect place to play. Perhaps most famously known for its Championship Golf Course, Whistling Straits (look out for the PGA Championship there this August), it also is home to 3 other impressive courses including The Irish, a links style course with windswept terrain and gorgeous glimpses of Lake Michigan, and Black Wolf Run, a picturesque championship course that uses the natural terrain to dazzle and challenge.
In fact, the beautiful mid-west landscape sits center-stage at Kohler. River Wildlife, the resort’s 500-acre wilderness preserve has over 18 miles of woodland trails, as well as five miles of meandering Sheboygan River for guests to explore and enjoy. A natural playground, guests can choose activities like kayaking, horseback riding, hiking, fishing, and even seasonal trap shooting.
River Wildlife is also home to an amazing little gem of a restaurant. Tucked away in the hardwood forest, River Wild Lodge Restaurant serves up a unique and delicious dining experience. Exclusive to members and hotel guests, diners experience fresh seasonal Midwest fare in a uniquely intimate setting. This rustic cabin has several dining areas, all complete with wildlife decor, warm lighting and sweet touches like wildflower bouquets on each table.
No matter what you’re looking for, Destination Kohler seems to deliver. Get ready to relax, play, connect with the land and experience the best in Wisconsin hospitality and charm.
