With both the Democratic Party and the Republican Party in disarray with respect to presidential candidates, it could be the crack in the door needed for a Libertarian Party presidential nominee to succeed. Republicans have tired of the establishment, causing outsider Donald Trump to advance strongly in the polls. A new poll out yesterday, August 30, 2015, found Trump at 23 percent and newcomer, Dr. Ben Carson at 18 percent favorability. Meanwhile, the same poll found Bernie Sanders continuing to dampen establishment Democrats dream of a Hillary Clinton presidency. Just earlier this month, most political pundits were talking about a Jeb Bush – Hillary Clinton ballot in 2016; however, the American people are having enough of being told who to vote for and are toppling all the traditional political models.
This discontent with “politics as usual” could open the door for a Libertarian Party to gain favor with the American people. Perhaps one of the Libertarian-minded American billionaires will jump into the race to give Trump a run for his money. In the 2012 presidential election, former Governor of New Mexico and Libertarian Party presidential nominee, Gary Johnson garnered one percent of the vote. A new poll performed yesterday found Johnson would likely get the Libertarian Party presidential nominee again in 2016 if he chose to run again. Although he has said he will likely run, he has not officially announced or committed himself to doing so.
Under Debbie Wasserman-Schultz’s leadership, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) was accused yesterday of rigging the election process by trying to give Hillary Clinton an advantage over other Democratic candidates. Yesterday, both Bernie Sanders and Martin O’Malley voiced their disgust with the DNC for limiting debates and trying to quash their campaigns. Speaking yesterday on CNN, Sanders said, “I think this country benefits, all people benefits, democracy benefits when we have debates; I want to see more of them.” O’Malley was speaking at an event alongside DNC Chairwoman Wasserman-Schultz, saying, “This is totally unprecedented in our party’s history. This sort of rigged process has never been attempted before. Who is the creators of this exactly? Where did it come from? To what end, for what purpose? What national or party interest does this decree serve. We are the Democratic Party not the UN-Democratic Party.” Bloomberg View columnist Al Hunt reverberated O’Malley’s concerns this morning on MSNBC saying that Debbie Wassermann-Schultz is “not an effective chairperson.” John Heilemann, managing editor for Bloomberg Politics said this morning, “It seems like the party is protecting Hillary Clinton.”
Meanwhile, the Republican Party is working on ways to eliminate Trump from the picture. The establishment candidates like Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio continue their cascade down a mountain while Trump and Carson climb to the top.
This avails itself an opportunity for Libertarian Party candidates to shine if the mainstream media will give them the light of day. Currently, the mainstream media will not mention Libertarian Party candidates and have never given them equal time with a Democrat or Republican. This has the effect of sending American voters to the polls without all the information they need to vote for the candidate most in line with their values.
Perhaps 2016 is the year the American voting public chooses to research the candidates rather than have them spoon-fed by the establishment and mainstream media. Perhaps this election cycle the American people will prove the political pundits wrong and elect a Libertarian as President of the United States. Granted, such a scenario is a long-shot; however, so is what we are seeing with the Trump phenomenon.
