I was appalled to read the nasty comments that Progressive Democrats posted on Congresswoman Janice Hahn’s Facebook page since her surprising vote on the SAFE Act last week. Every page post about a community event, announcement or update, regardless of topic, is being taken over by left-wingers, using harassment techniques common among Occu-liers and normally reserved in baseless attacks on conservatives and independent thinkers.
See the posting about the Congresswoman handing out more than 200 free turkeys to local families at Community Grace Brethren Church in North Long Beach? Allen Partin and Robert Schramm decided to add more attacks about her vote there; because that’s more important.
How about the very nice photo of Hahn with the student body President of Wilmington Middle School and her little sister? You’ll also see more attacks from Schramm, and two liberal colleagues, Jack Lorenz and John Ehrenfeld, piling on inappropriately. What if it had been one of their daughters in the photo with their Congressmember? Would they want a group of pro-lifers making comments about her pro-choice stance under it?
By the way, these butt-hurt individuals have a long way to go to catch up to my dissatisfaction with Hahn’s congressional voting record. I even submitted a letter to local publications a few years back calling out her countering actions regarding a local cell tower issue that our neighborhood council had already vetted when I was an elected board member.
Back in 2011, I called foul when a local GOP activist created a disgusting campaign video depicting Hahn dancing in a bikini handing out money to gang members. (I continue to call out the county GOP and local GOP clubs for endorsing this guy twice for local office SINCE that video came out, including earlier this month. This is why you don’t see me at those meetings often.)
In full disclosure, I have had a strong friendly relationship with Hahn since my neighborhood council days, when she was our Los Angeles City Councilwoman. We’ve had many conversations about local issues, as well as federal topics. We tend to agree on most of the local issues, and think the other is extremely naïve on their federal positions. Through this we’ve NEVER become nasty as the Left Wing Occu-lier crowd has become on her Facebook Page since her vote to support the SAFE ACT. Even after she explained her vote as one “to assuage fears” and enable the refugee process to begin, the vitriol has continued by some who seem to have nothing else to do but troll her Facebook page and post their nasty ignorant comments under photos showing the ILWU’s Feed the Community Day and the Town Hall to fight human sex trafficking.
My advice to her staff that we conservative bloggers have known for years – you can’t fight ignorant activist postings with objective justifications. The activists thrive on that ignorance; showing how a vote may be beneficial to both schools of thought drives in the face of the party regulars who have to believe everything their party does is halo-worthy, and everything from the other side should be pitch forked. I also understand the angle some are revealing – that Hahn’s vote will somehow sit better with future voters in her next campaign – for Los Angeles County Supervisor one of the more conservative-leaning districts. Personally, I believe she is far too known of a political commodity, including her public stance with the hotel workers for higher wages and her side selection in the ILWU v. PMA stand-off. A single deviation vote from the liberal norm isn’t going to earn her a membership card from the South Bay Tea Party anytime soon.
What Hahn should be given credit for is actually considering what the SAFE Act does, and seeing an opportunity where the naïve leadership of her party was not allowed – because the President is not allowing it. The issue of the Syrian refugees possibly (er, likely) to have a few ISIS sympathizers, or even infiltrators, is a concern for most Americans. According to a Gallup poll taken in the last week, over 60% of Americans disapprove of any plan to bring in Syrian refugees; 37% support Syrian refugee immigration.
However, Gallup goes further to point out terrorism associated with accepting Syrian refugees may not be the prime mover in their polling. From Gallup, “Americans’ opposition to the current plan is in line with public opinion on refugee situations in the past. Across seven different refugee situations since 1939 for which Gallup has a basic support or opposition measure, the average level of public support has been 33% and the average level of opposition has been 57%.”
The chance to have refugee support in exchange for heightened security screening should be an opportunity seized by both parties. It would help the negative perception about Democrats on national security while opening the door for the GOP to show refugee support. I hope some Senate Democrats see this as well, and are then able to explain the win-win to the President. (I personally do not believe it will happen. I foresee the SAFE Act passing in the Senate, but not by enough to avoid the President’s veto; which he will do because he has never backed down from a bad position, no matter who what is revealed to him.)
Liberal progressives, like those attacking Hahn on her Facebook page, try to pretend they are the good hearted, accepting of all types, and that all others are either naïve or evil. I should just let it go: After all, I recognize names criticizing her as ones that used to make similar moronic posts on my Facebook page. Hahn is keeping them busy for me!
But there’s a place for everything, and commandeering good natured topics and community supportive postings to take political revenge on a “stray politician” who skipped a dose of the liberal progressive kool-aid before reviewing legislation is no way to help your cause.
Will they get more attention by using a feel-good topic to continue beating a dead horse? Sure!
Think those who supported the feel-good topic are going to like having their positive topic taken over? There’s a certain term for people like that, and it rhymes with “grass mole”!
