No matter what the day, Kevin’s Place is the go-to spot in Deerfield, IL, for a good meal and fun, family-friendly atmosphere. From the time one enters the narrow area in the restaurant, bordered along the north side with a counter and bar stools, magic is in the air. That area also includes seating which can be used either to hang out while waiting to eat in the back restaurant or simply enjoy a meal while enjoying the character — and character abounds.
The establishment is casual and nostalgic through and through. Filled with memorabilia, its yellow walls are filled throughout with an assemblage of tributes to the restaurant mixed with an eclectic blend friendly, positive sayings, letter s from kids, photos of proprietor Kevin Quigley in local theatrical productions along with play posters, mixed with bowling pins, colorful plates, a mural and a black and white checkerboard floor and logo. The tables, mostly, are covered in easy care plastic cloths and always welcoming and eager to serve staff wears bowling shirts.
Supporters abound. Formerly called the Cherry Pit, Quigley opened the place anew as Kevin’s Place in May 2006. When he became ill and when he was threatened with losing the café due to a tax issue, the community rallied to his support, raising the necessary money to resolve the issue.
The food is fresh, fun and very family-focused. In addition to child friendly favorites like Mickey Mouse, M&M, chocolate chip and silver dollar pancakes, the menu also offers salads, omelets and a variety of specialty dishes to meet every taste. The prices are portions generous and the prices reasonable – comparable with other diners.
Conversation abound, some about the décor itself. However, Quigley makes the place special. He is great with children, knows most of his guests and welcomes everyone. He aims to please and feels at home with his guests. Children there rarely need to be reprimanded, as the environment encourages the use of manners, being polite and good behavior. Crayons and menus on which to color are provided at each table and conversation is encouraged. If Kevin is on duty and senses a child beginning to have a meltdown, he often comes over and talks to them at their eye level and calms them down.
Few local establishments enjoy the devotion Kevin’s place enjoys. Based on experience, its reputation for being a relaxing, fun and family-focused place to enjoy breakfast or lunch is well-deserved.
