Decision making can be very difficult for most people. Sometimes, there’s too much on the line, but you have no other options but to make those for your business. It usually takes a long time to get used to creating decisions, especially if you feel like there is still so much to learn. However, when the situation calls for it, you just need to take a leap of faith and trust yourself to make it through.
Let’s take a look at some ways you could make better decisions especially if they involve business operations.
1. Learn how to focus
Being mindful of your surrounding helps you become better in making decisions. By knowing what’s at stake and what are the benefits for pulling the trigger allows you to become more decisive.
Meditate and breathe. Once you’ve relaxed, focus all your energy on the situation at hand and slowly breakdown all the factors that you would have to consider. Make sure that you are keeping yourself from being distracted, as this would be helpful on having a clearer and sounder mind on creating a decision.
Some questions to consider: Will this task be useful for my decision making? Will this promote progress to the current issue?
You would need to list down everything that you would need to consider before creating the decision and identify them one by one. Performing a situational analysis would help on seeing the details that can affect the changes that you are about to dive in, as well as the bigger picture and consequences that you might need to work on later.
Some questions to consider: What are the direct repercussions of my action? Who would be affected on this decision? What are the changes that will take place if I choose the former or the latter?
3. Ask for opinions
Identify a number of people from different sectors and study their opinions. Take note of their points and look on various angles to solve the situation at hand. Knowing how each factor affects each sector would be very helpful on weighing out the pros and cons of your next steps.
Some questions to consider: How would my customers / clients / employees react on these changes? Which one of the choices would the majority prefer? Who would implement this and what might be their reaction to these changes?
4. Consider a back-up plan.
Despite having a concrete decision, make sure that you also think about the possible options that you can take in case things don’t work out. Trust your instincts and your resolution, but make sure to factor out all possible scenarios so it will be fool proof.
Some questions to consider: What are the other options in case the plan failed? What are the other steps that I must take to move forward if one of the elements of my current choice fails?
5. Be honest.
Make sure that you’re truthful when it comes to your choice, especially when it comes down to your motivation and objectives. In order to make better decisions, it’s very important to always consider the long term effects and how they all tie back to one central goal of improving the business. Most business owners are often caught up with making quick decisions but often couldn’t really tie it back to their company goals.
Some questions to consider: Is my mind already made up and I’m just looking for validation? Will this really be beneficial for everyone?
