The August 26 closing of the two indoor pools will kick off the annual Maintenance Week, which will shut down most of the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center, 15801 Michigan Ave. in Dearborn.
From August 31-Sept. 7, the entire building (including the Dearborn Senior Center and the vicinity of the Michael A. Guido Theater) will be closed for the facility’s annual maintenance, except for the The Center’s service desk, and the Michael A. Guido Theater Box Office. The service desk will be open from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. from August 31-Sept. 3, and the box office will be open Sept. 1-4 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. (the entire building will be shut over the Labor Day weekend before normal operations resume at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday).
“We’ve got an information rack by the service desk where people can still pick up flyers on our programs,” said Dearborn Recreation and Parks Department assistant John Kerr. “We will still take registrations for programs and give out picnic permits, as long as the service desk is open, and it will be the same with the box office.”
During Maintenance Week, the equipment and facilities at The Center will be extensively cleaned, reconditioned and refurbished (such as cleaning carpeting, tile work in the pools, refinishing floors, and painting). Kerr guessed this work would be an inconvenience regardless when it occurred, but said Maintenance Week probably is scheduled annually around now because it is a time of transition. With kids going back to school, he said, the recreation year has a natural break as the summer activities tend to end in August, “so it’s sort of down time for us.”
Kerr pointed out that Ford Community and Performing Arts Center pass-holders will have their pass cards honored at Dearborn’s outdoor pools during Maintenance Week. Both the Dunworth and Ford Woods Pools will be open daily through Labor Day (4-7 p.m. weekdays and noon-6 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Labor Day). Those people who are not pass-holders will pay the regular price for using the Dearborn’s community pools, he added.
King Boring Field and the soccer field on the grounds surrounding The Ford Community and Performing Arts Center will continue normal operation during Maintenance Week.
“The outdoor areas will not be impacted, just the building,” Kerr said. “And even when the building is closed, the phones will always accept messages.”
The Ford Community and Performing Arts Center is located on the eastern edge of the city’s municipal complex (including the Dearborn Police Headquarters and 19th District Court, the Henry Ford Centennial Library, and athletic field and the Dearborn Administrative Center. It is on the south side of Michigan Avenue (U.S.-12), generally across from Ford World Headquarters and just east of Exit 6 off the Southfield Freeway (M-39).
