The bodies of eight dead babies were discovered inside an apartment in a rural town in Germany. A woman who lives in a neighboring apartment contacted the local police after she entered the apartment and made the horrific discovery of one dead baby. This sent the police out to investigate and that’s when they found more dead infants.
According to MSN News on November 13, it was during the investigation that police found another six infant bodies bringing the count to seven babies, which was the original reported number of deceased babies discovered. Another dead baby was discovered in another room in the apartment, bringing the total to eight deceased infants altogether.
DB Techno is reporting that the babies were all newborns in this apartment in Wallenfell, Germany, which is part of Bavaria. This is a small town of about 2,800 residents in the southern part of Germany. As in any small town, people tend to know one another and this shocking discovery has them baffled as to why this happened. It appears they’ve made up their minds as to who is responsible, but police have not confirmed this as of yet.
Because the remains were in various stages of decomposition, identifying the babies sexes, age and cause of death will take some time. The bodies will go through a postmortem (autopsy) and the results will probably be available early next week.
The babies were individually wrapped in towels and then put in airtight bags. The remains were found stored inside a room that was once a sauna, but appeared to be used as a storage room with other items stacked inside. The door was locked to this room when police arrived to the apartment, which has been empty of occupants since September.
Police are looking for a 45-year-old woman, who was a previous resident of this apartment, for questioning. The woman named only as Andrea G. may or may not be the mother of the dead babies. A police spokesperson told the media, “We’re at least searching for her as if she were the mother of the children,” but they won’t know until the find her and talk with her.
The people of the town, including the mayor, seem to be taking the discovery of the dead babies personally. Andrea G. lived in that house for 18 years and from all accounts she was a wonderful woman and a great mom. The mayor of Wallenfell, Jens Korn told the media:
“I’m completely flabbergasted. We are a small, lively community with 2,800 residents, all of whom know each other. We are very distraught, and are of course all asking each other: might we have done something? Might we have helped in some way?”
It sounds as if the folks of this town believe the children belonged to this Andrea G. The mayor told the media that she is believed to have moved in with a new partner and left the house back in September. Andrea G. had lived in that apartment with her boyfriend, who was “deeply involved in the local community.” Andrea G. worked at local swimming baths.
It sounds as if the apartment was left with much of the family’s belongings still inside as pictures of kids were still on the wall, said one of the neighbors. Police are having a hard time locating this woman’s new home.
While police are looking for this woman, they are still questioning others in this criminal investigation. There are “scores of police officers” assigned to this investigation. “There are still many people we need to speak to and lots of searches that need to be carried out,” the spokeswoman said.
