Despite Buffy the Vampire Slayer being off the air for years, Dark Horse Comics has kept the series alive and well with its comic series taking up the slack. While they deliver the usual monthly book and trade paper backs one of their coolest releases are their library editions. Earlier this year they debuted yet another one kicking off an all-new season with Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 9 Volume 1 Library Edition.
In this collection the world has lost its connection to magic, and a new breed of vampires has been born—zompires! Still, there’s more trouble for Buffy the Vampire Slayer: a magic siphon is loose, student loans have to be paid, Willow goes walkabout, and Buffy finds herself pregnant while coming to terms with her relationship with Spike. The comic season of Buffy has taken the series in some bizarre directions that they would have never gone in the series and that is both good and bad. Here they have injected a bug like alien race that is pretty silly, but does add some fun new elements of humor to Spike’s life while it may not do much for the overall story. Outside of that the story involving all of these characters now that the world is completely different makes for some interesting directions for them all. Buffy’s world is the same struggle as always, but they have injected it with some creative new directions that play up her struggle for normalcy as well as bringing back some old story elements to add to the mix. This new world of no magic has cleverly created a new direction for the vampires as well that makes a lot of sense and in turn helps make it feel fresh. The stories do well to keep the characters grounded to their usual personalities without making them feel stagnant or forgetting about everything that happened to them throughout the series. The artwork varies throughout with some being a lot better than others, but all of it still being effective and keeping the look of the characters intact. As expected there is plenty of action here and the return of some old characters and introduction of some new ones makes this chapter in the Buffy-verse one that fans will no doubt want to sink their teeth into.
This collection not only collects Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 9 Volume 1 and 2, but also includes some cool behind the scenes stuff including sketches, alternate cover designs, character designs and more. BE sure to grab this awesome Library collection available now and be on the lookout for Volume 2 in June.
