Danny Pintauro, best known as Jonathon Bowers on the 80s hit comedy “Who’s the Boss” and Stephen King “Cujo” star has revealed that he is HIV positive according to an MSN report on Monday, September 28. Pintauro shared the details of his 12-year-long secret of being HIV positive and how he contracted it on an all-new episode of “Oprah: Where Are They Now?” on Saturday.
“I wanted to tell you this a long time ago, but I wasn’t ready. I’m ready now,” he revealed, holding back tears. “I’m HIV positive. I have been for 12 years, and it’s just a big deal. You know? It’s not something that people are talking about.” In 1997, Danny Pintaurocame out publicly as gay after the tabloid National Enquirer threatened to out him.
“When I first came out, which was before everybody — I mean, Ellen and I came out the same year. Rosie came out four years after I did — I missed the opportunity to be a beacon of light for gay kids who were going through what I was going through,” he tells Winfrey. Revealing the very personal details of his heart-wrenching struggles that come with being diagnosed HIV positive, the 39-year-old former child actor also discussed the epidemic of crystal meth use within the gay community. Pintauro told Winfrey he was diagnosed in March of 2003.
“There was more that I wanted to explore sexually,” Pintauro told Winfrey. “Crystal meth takes away your inhibitions. You have no limits. And if you want to explore that adventurous side, taking the drug is going to put you there.” Danny recalls how his readiness to experiment led to a drug-fueled sexual encounter, Pintauro said, with a man whose name he did not know. “I went in for a regular checkup,” he said. “You know, as a responsible gay man, you’re getting an HIV test done every six months.”
Years later Danny met and married the love of his life. In 2014 Pintauro married husband Wil Tabares in a small beachfront ceremony in Dana Point, CA. The two reportedly got engaged in 2013 in Palm Springs after a year of dating. Danny Pintaurowill shares more details of his life with HIV l will on “ET” on Monday.
