Walt Disney World will add a Toy Story Land to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, part of a reimagining of the park that was officially announced at D23 Expo on Aug. 15. The new land will add two new attractions, new not only to Disney’s Hollywood Studios but to any Disney park.
Toy Story Land will be an 11-acre land inspired by the Disney-Pixar film. Its immersive environment will engage Disney guests by having them to step into world of the film as seen from the toy’s perspective. They will enter the “adventurous outdoors of Andy’s backyard,” seemingly shrunk to Buzz and Woody’s sizes. The oversized toys – building blocks, plastic buckets and shovels, game board pieces – featured in the area show off Andy’s imaginative play.
In keeping with that theming, Toy Story Land’s family-friendly roller coaster will represent Andy’s hack of a roller coaster playset, using Slinky Dog instead of the kit’s ride vehicle. Disney guests will ride on the back of Slinky Dog in a toy-filled tour of Toy Story Land that will include some of the film’s beloved characters, such as Rex and Hamm.
An alien saucers attraction, based on the movie’s Pizza Planet claw machine game, will feature the little green aliens. Guests can take their own flying saucers out for a spin, with music, lighting and sound effects adding to the arcade-game action. The attraction will add a touch of suspense for those familiar with the movie, as “The Claw” looms over.
In addition to the two new attractions, Toy Story Land will also be home to the existing Toy Story Mania! The popular attraction, themed to represent Andy’s build-out of a midway game under his bed, will add a third track. The attraction’s expansion was announced in March.
Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Bob Chapek and Imagineer Kathy Magnum announced Toy Story Land during a D23 Expo presentation covering current and future developments for the theme parks. The new land is part of an overall transformation for Disney’s Hollywood Studios that will shift the park’s focus from a behind-the-scenes look at the movies to one that places guests inside the movies.
In her remarks on Toy Story Land during the D23 Expo, Magnum also mentioned the extensive makeover of Disney California Adventure as inspiration for the reimaging of Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
“As all of you know, here in Anaheim, we’ve been quite successful with taking immersive experiences to a whole new level as we did with Cars Land. In fact, one of our favorite stories from opening day is that we overheard a little boy asking his mom, ‘Is this where they filmed the Cars movie?’” Magnum said. “That’s exactly how we want people to feel – like they’ve stepped onto the set of their favorite film … like the quaint town of Radiator Springs or, in the case of ‘Toy Story,’ the wild and adventurous outdoors of Andy’s backyard.”
Toy Story Land is one of two major additions for Disney’s Hollywood Studios that has been announced at D23 Expo 2015. Earlier Saturday, at Walt Disney Studios live-action movie presentation, The Walt Disney Company Chairman and CEO Bob Iger announced a Star Wars-themed land would be built at Disney’s Hollywood Studios as well as at Disneyland park in Anaheim, Calif. At 14 acres, the Star Wars expansion will be the largest in the history of Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
