Disney will mark 60 years of Disneyland this year, and the occasion will also be marked at D23 Exp 2015. On June 30, D23 released information on two Disneyland-focused panels for the Expo: a photographic presentation and a “Disneyland Home Movies” presentation. These panels join a previously announced Walt Disney Archives exhibit to celebrate a milestone anniversary for the “Happiest Place on Earth.”
D23: The Official Disney Fan Club will provide a look back at Disneyland at D23 Expo 2015 that is literally that – a look. Many looks. Several Expo offerings will showcase some of the park’s visual riches to help explore Disneyland’s history. Two Friday presentations, the first Expo’s first day, will feature images that document the earlier days of Disneyland with some rare materials.
Charles Phoenix: Big Retro Disneyland Slide Show! (Friday, Aug. 14 at 10 a.m. in Stage 28). Author, performer and pop-culture aficionado Charles Phoenix will entertain D23 Expo guests with selections from his collection of “found” Kodachrome images in keeping with his interest in mid-century-era kitsch and Americana. Phoenix’s presentation focuses on Disneyland’s early days and will include materials featuring long-gone attractions, including the Phantom Boats, Flying Saucers, the Indian Village, PeopleMover, House of the Future, Carousel of Progress, and the original Tomorrowland—promoted as “The World of 1986”—and the all-new Tomorrowland in 1967.
Disneyland Home Movies (Friday, Aug.14 at 4:30 p.m. in Stage 28). This presentation features a collection of one-of-a-kind footage and photography in a visual tour that travels from Walt’s inspiration for Disneyland to its opening and evolution all captured via the moving image. Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences professionals Randy Haberkamp, (Managing Director of Preservation and Foundation Programs) and Lynne Kirste (Special Collections Curator) will host the presentation. Suzanne Lloyd will introduce her grandfather Harold Lloyd’s photography of Disneyland, which was taken the week before the park’s opening and on opening day. The presentation may also include a few surprise special guests.
In addition to Friday’s presentations, D23 Expo 2015 will showcase an exhibit celebrating six decades of Disneyland history. “Walt Disney Archives Presents – Disneyland: The Exhibit” will offer a 12,000 square-feet exhibit, centrally located on the Expo show floor, and feature more than 300 items. The exhibit will use areas devoted to the park’s history, attractions, parades, and entertainment. Featured displays include those focused on the construction of Disneyland, Pirates of the Caribbean, “Mickey Mouse Club” at Disneyland, the exclusive Club 33, and collectible merchandise.
D23 Expo 2015 will take place Aug. 14-15 at the Anaheim Convention Center near Disneyland Resort. The three-day “all things Disney” fan event covers theme parks, film and television, theatrical productions and music, history, and collectibles and merchandise. The Expo also includes select coverage of Pixar, Lucasfilm, Marvel and the Muppets.
D23 Expo 2015 is an event open to both D23 members and the general public. General admission tickets are $74 for a one-day adult admission and $54 for children 3–12. Tickets for members of D23: The Official Disney Fan Club are $65 for a one-day adult admission and $48 for children. Multi-day money-saving tickets are also available.
