CryptTV is a new digital genre studio co-founded by actor/director Eli Roth and the amazing guy I met at Long Beach Comic Con, CEO of Crypt TV Jack Davis. CryptTV’s motto is #WeirdisGood and that is what their programming is all about. Celebrating the weird, the strange, the difficult, the geeky, the scary and the grosser things in life, CryptTV gives us all that in small bite-sized (yes, if you see some of the shows you will get the pun) content, cleverly making use of multiple types of social media. With our TV audiences turning into a society of people walking around staring at phones and tablets, this kind of small-screen, short-form programming is what we need! The program that came to the attention of LA Zombie Examiner is, of course, 1 Minute Horror, but after spending an evening laughing, jumping, and empathizing my way though all the well made, wonderfully short, but action packed shows, I was hooked! There is a lot of horror based shows on the channel like 1 Minute Horror, Sunday Shorts, Choose Their Kill, Drug Deals and Would You Rather, enough to keep any horror lover happy. But again CryptTV is about weird and shows like Permanent and A Little Different bring out issues that show us other sides of our culture.
Jack Davis took the time to answer a few questions I had about CryptTV. He shared with me the inspiration of CryptTV and where they are going.
Vicki Woods: When did CryptTV start, who is involved and what was the inspiration for it?
Jack Davis: CryptTV launched recently – April 15th, 2015. Tax day of all days! CryptTV is a digital brand that specializes in original for digital genre content and we release most of our videos on our Facebook – Facebook.com/CryptTV. Eli Roth is my co-founder. My title is CEO as I run the company every day but Eli is my full partner and co-founder and plays a massive role in our mission and content. The inspiration? As social media and digital content begins to proliferate the internet we noticed that there was no brand that celebrate all things WEIRD – horror, paranormal, piercings, tattoos, etc. We wanted to create a brand that celebrates our motto of #WeirdisGood and creates content for that audience. So we can celebrate tattoos and piercings, conspiracy theories and ghost stories, slashers and scary shorts. No more makeup vlogs and selfies, let’s let weird take back over online content.
VW: Where did the ideas for 1 minute horror come from? Are any of the stories part of a bigger movie, or are they just shorts?
JD: 1 Minute Horror was created by Shane Leary – one of our amazing creators! The show currently focuses on delivering excellent, short content but as with ALL of our shows we keep in mind how we can expand them past short form and help grow our filmmakers’ talent and ideas!
VW: On CryptTV you have programming other than horror. What types do you have and why is there a mix?
JD: There is a mix because we are not a horror brand, we love horror and make it but our brand is about genre content and that #WeirdisGood mentality. We want to serve all the weirdos and so called ‘freaks’ out there and build a family for the outcasts who don’t like the mainstream BS. So we create any content that will serve our #WeirdisGood message.
VW: Do you write everything in-house or do you take submissions?
JD: We develop in house and take submissions, feel free to submit to us at Community@CryptTV.com!
VW: What is the direction you are going with Crypt TV? What can fans look forward to?
JD: Fans can look forward to more original content and the creation of new characters! We want to empower great storytellers, make new characters for our fans but above all grow our #WeirdisGood message and have the people who feel like they have no home or acceptance or place of comfort in mainstream social media join the #CryptFamily and build this community!
CryptTV is available on mutiple social media sites and they want to serve fans with content every place possible! You will find them at:
