Change.org is getting involved with a petition to stop an Oklahoma school to stop cruel dissections on felines and other animals. The petition was submitted by Debbie Bohling from Tulsa, Oklahoma and involved Harding Charter Preparatory High School. To date this petition has 505 supporters. It needs many more!
The sad fact behind Debbie’s petition is that students at Harding Charter Preparatory High School have been videotaped dancing with dead cats. Now, the fact is that kids will do some really crazy thing; some just to be recognized by their peers. However, the video was shot right in the midst of a class in a classroom. The question that remains is where was the teacher during this little ‘funny’ laugh fest?
The video recently appeared online. For feline lovers and other animal advocates, it was a most horrifying site. While humans learn from animal dissections, this in no way gives kids or anyone the right to be inconsiderate with the bodies. Many people want to know where the cats came from in the first place! Cats seem to be the topic of many concerns because too many people downright disrespect this species of animals and it is not appreciated by a host of others that simply love these fully little canines!
PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has gotten involved. Their statement about this issue was “Studies show that classroom animal dissection fosters insensitivity toward animals, and this troubling situation is a case in point. Cats used for classroom dissection are often someone’s lost or stolen animal companion — and in science classrooms, they’re treated like disposable laboratory tools.”
The Principal of Harding Charter Preparatory High School, Justin Hunt, just happens to agree with PETA. It seems that this man was quite disgusted and appalled. He stated that “animals should be treated and handled with respect and dignity.”
The petition has asked that if the citizens of Oklahoma and the rest of the general public do believe that Principal Hunt felt this strongly, that he should do everything he can to ensure that felines as well as all other animals are no longer killed and then disrespected in classroom setting.
While we do learn a lot from dissection techniques, the petition listed on Change.org does have a point about the other technologically advanced alternatives to what they term is outdated use of animals used to learn about anatomy. Many may or may not agree to this statement, what many will agree upon is the fact that the animals that lost their lives to help people learn should still be granted some sort of dignity – alive or dead.
While animal dissection has taken humans a long way in the educational field and in the field of medicine, lackluster behavior get no one anywhere!
