Winemaker Ryan Carr has been producing wines from Santa Barbara County since 1998 when he took his Art degree and moved to Santa Ynez Valley and discovered the world of wine. He worked for the Central Coast Wine Services in Santa Maria making wine for several wineries and developing his style. In 1999 he made a Cabernet Sauvignon in his garage from grapes grown in a vineyard down the road from his home. His 10 cases were well received by this family and friends and his passion for winemaking grew. He partnered with Andy Kahn of Kahn Winery to work as their assistant winemaker. Over the years his winemaking skills improved and by 2004 the Carr Winery was making over 1000 cases.
Carr Vineyards is also a full service vineyard management company providing consultation and design services to winegrowers in Santa Barbara County. This gains Ryan access to grapes grown to his exact specifications making sure only the finest grapes are used in his wine.
His latest project is CrossHatch wines, focusing on co-fermented blends from Santa Barbara County vineyards. After making many single varietal wines over the years CrossHatch was his opportunity to try some unique blends. The name is inspired by cross hatching, an artistic technique that uses closely spaced intersecting lines to create shading, definition and form in a drawing.
According to Carr Winery Marketing Manager Kayla Bonnin, “the idea of co-fermented wine is nothing new. Some of the best and oldest wines in the world are made this way, but with the microclimates of Santa Barbara it really adds another layer to the process. Co-fermentation brings out and creates flavors in the wine that would not have existed otherwise. This makes the CrossHatch wine truly one-of-a-kind.”
