Known for its big crappie and lots of em’, Crescent and Dead Lake will be the site for the first Crappie USA (CUSA) tournament of the 2016 season. Tournament date is November 28. The season starts in Florida and ends in Tennessee on Kentucky and Barkley Lakes in October 2016.
Legal waters for the Early Bird Qualifier are Crescent and Dead Lake up to the St. Johns River. Pre-fishing will be hot and heavy on the days prior to the tournament as competing anglers try to find the hot spots in preparation for tournament day. That practice fishing must stop at midnight before the tournament.
Tournament Director Jeremy Coe is excited about the Florida tournament. “I think it’s gonna’ be a very good tournament,” said Coe. “Weather is looking great and I think we are going to have a very good turnout of anglers! It’s a good fishing time on Crescent Lake and I feel certain we will have not only one but several 3-pound black crappie!”
Dennis Outlaw will travel from South Carolina to fish the tournament. He had some pre-tournament thoughts about the winning weight. “Winning weights can easily be affected by rain,” explained Outlaw. “Wind won’t affect the top weight much, but will affect a lot of individual weights. If it rains and cools the water the weights could be lower. If the water stays hot it will take 11 plus pounds to win it. “
Official start time is 6:30 a.m. on Saturday and continues until 3:00 p.m. Anglers must then be in the weight in line by 4:00 p.m. to avoid disqualification.
The Late Registration and Seminar Site for the Florida event is Bull Creek Ramp on Dead Lake. Just set your GPS to 3861 Co. Rd. 2006, Bunnell, FL 32110. Late Sign-In begins and 5 p.m. and goes until 7 p.m. The seminar is open to the public and will begin at 7 p.m.
The event also includes a Kids’ Rodeo on Saturday morning at the Bull Creek Ramp. Have the kids there a little early to register and be ready to begin fishing about 8:00 a.m. The rodeo ends at 11:00 a.m. with awards and prizes for the kids.
