Crappie Masters 2015 National Championship day one
Anglers from 22 states hit the water today, September 25 on the first day of the Bass Pro Shops Crappie Masters National Championship. The top 16 teams had 10 pounds or more and a huge fish weighing 2.78 pounds came to the scales.
The best total weight on seven fish came from the American Ethanol team of Kevin Jones and Billy Don Surface at 13.01 pounds.
“We had a really good day out there today”, said Jones. “In prefishing the best we could do was about 7.8 pounds and that covered an eight day period.” When asked if he would change anything on day two he responded, “We have a good plan and we are going to stick with it.”
“We had a good day, but it could have been better,” added Surface. “We lost a couple that would have replace a couple that we weighed in. We are ready to go tomorrow.”
Last years National Champions and Ozark Rods pro staffers, Alan Carter and Tony Sheppard, reported a slow start on day one. “It was a pretty slow start out there this morning,” recounted Carter. “By 10:30 or 11:00 we only had about 5 pounds. Our fish were not where they needed to be. I didn’t sleep much last night and probably won’t tonight.”
Sheppard agreed. “It was a slow start. I told Alan we had to run. We went down the lake and found some fish to finish the day.” Last year’s champs weighed in 10.75 to stay in the running on day two. “We didn’t fish all of our stuff,” said Sheppard. “We left something for tomorrow.”
Last year’s Angler Team of the Year and Rockport Rattler pros, Whitey Outlaw and Mike Parrot finished day one out of the top ten but remained hopeful. “We caught plenty of fish,” said Outlaw. “We used 3 ½ pounds of minnows out there. We had four really good fish. We needed three more. Today was good until the wind came up. We had to weigh in three little small fish. Some of these guys will come down and some will go up. We put 8.01 on the board and we are still in the hunt.”
John Eubanks and Shane Moore lead the Big Fish competition with a 2.78-pound monster.
