When it comes to autism, changing some of the commonly held assumptions and misconceptions of autism has been the mission of many, but none more so than the mother-daughter team of Camille Cohn and Riley Cohn. Currently, one in every 110 children is diagnosed with autism, that makes this condition more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric aids combined.
With almost 1.5 million Americans affected by autism, and with prevalence increasing, the Cohn duo are hoping to change some of what people think about autism with their new children’s book, Cooper and the Big Apple. The Cohn’s are a small business with a passion and a cause they believe in deeply.
“I wrote Cooper and the Big Apple in hopes that educators could use it in the classroom to teach young children about figures of speech. It could also be used as a tool to teach other children about what it is like to be on the autism spectrum,” explains Camille. “But I think the most important thing I want people to know is that people with autism might be different, but they are not less. Most people on the autism spectrum are extremely intelligent; but they are wired differently. They have a hard time expressing themselves. My hope is that as awareness increases, the general public will be able to give autistic people opportunities that celebrate their unique talents.”
This well written and well illustrated book tells the story of Cooper, a cat who heads off on a trip to New York City with his best friend, Jennifer. Cooper is autistic and gets confused by the figures of speech and nicknames he hears in and around the city. Readers get a lesson on what what someone who has autism might deal with on a daily basis. Cooper eventually gets used to his surroundings as he lives and learns.
This book is fun, educational and a great read for kids of all ages. It not only teaches kids about autism, but it also encourages autistic kids to live a full life and take part in new experiences. Putting the challenges of autism down in words and pictures is a difficult task, but it’s one the Cohn family was willing to take on. Cooper and the Big Apple is now out in hard cover for $15.95 on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and in other bookstores. The book is also available in Kindle form.
