After Connie Ditto was reported missing by her husband last week and found safe and sound several days later the case took another bizarre twist. At first Connie’s whereabouts were not disclosed by police, leaving an air of mystery to this case, but police now report that she was found taking refuge in a nearby hotel room.
According to Fox News on August 15, the 41-year-old mother claims she was hiding out because she was a victim of domestic abuse and her husband, Mark Ditto, 49, was the culprit. He was arrested on domestic assault charges after his wife reported this to police.
This news has floored Mark Ditto, who is now not allowed near his wife, as she has taken out an order of protection against him. He claims this is not the case and suggests that his stepdaughters can back up him up on this. Connie Ditto went missing on Tuesday after calling her husband to say she was going to a walk-in clinic to get the head injury checked out. She hit her head in a fall the week prior to her disappearance and she said she was feeling dizzy and suffering from a headache.
The very last communication anyone received from Connie was when she texted her husband to say that she was at the clinic and being sent to the hospital for X-rays. She told her husband not to come to the hospital. Mark Ditto and his stepdaughters, who are Connie’s biological children, went to the clinic but she wasn’t there.
This is when police were called and a missing person report was filed. Police found that Connie had gone to the clinic but left before her name was called. Mark Ditto was desperate to find his wife, he was petrified that she had a head injury and was blacked out in her car somewhere.
KFOR Local News 3 reports that police used a license plate reader while searching for Connie’s car, which was found in the parking lot of the Extended Stay American Hotel in Innsbrook, just north of Richmond, Virginia. This is when she told police that her husband allegedly assaulted her and she was hiding from him.
Her husband believes Connie leaving home and checking into a hotel stems from an incident at home when Connie was allegedly drunk. He and his stepdaughters tried to get her car keys from her so she wouldn’t leave the house. Mark Ditto told reporters:
“I’m totally floored,” he told the reporter. “We as a family are very happy Connie was found unharmed. I’m very sad and sorry for her apparent health problems. I’m very disappointed by what she’s put her family through and all the people across the country who supported her search.”
It is hard to believe a mother would hide out from an abusive husband, but leave her two daughters in his care for days. She didn’t even call her girls, who must have been worried about their mom. While the investigation is on-going, it appears there are still some unanswered questions. The fact that Connie Ditto is afraid of her husband, so much so that she needed to hide out, but left her kids with him is a bit odd. This strange situation was something commenters were quick to point out on the Fox News article.
CalmKnight writes: “So she was scared of her husband but not scared her husband would harm her children? doesn’t make sense.” Some have suggested she is having an affair and this is a cover-up. One comment points out another possibility as nottaliberal writes, “My wife is a doctor and if there really was a head injury this type of thing is not inconsistent with a bleed causing memory problems even hallucinations. It seems the children would have backed their mothers story if true. The police may be unintentionally signing this women’s death warrant.”
