It seems that the Confederate battle flag is causing problems for a number of average Americans across the country. In one incident reported Wednesday by the Nacogdoches Daily Sentinel, a woman with a Confederate flag sticker on her car said three men began cursing and chasing her.
According to the Daily Sentinel, the woman said the men “began cursing her and running towards her car due to a Confederate flag sticker on her rear window.” No arrests were made, but, the report adds, deputies contacted one of the men chasing the woman and “advised him of the criminal actions that could be taken if the harassment continued.”
Wednesday’s report is not the only incident where the flag has sparked violence. A Virginia homeowner displaying the battle flag said that someone threw a 15 – 20 pound driveway stone through his front window.
“If you got a problem, you come and talk to me. Don’t destroy my property,” Joe Quick told CBS affiliate WTVR. “You work too hard in life to pay for these things. I’m a hard working man. I’m not a millionaire.”
The North Carolina-based Gaston Gazette said early this week that the flag was “a resounding theme” in at least three incidents in recent weeks. Two men said their vehicles were damaged for flying the flag. In one incident, shots were fired into a truck displaying the flag. According to the report, bullets were fired through the door and into a seat where a woman was sitting. “Another stray bullet hit the window to a nearby apartment,” the Gazette said. Police are investigating the incident.
On Saturday, the Gazette reported, one man said someone had stolen his battle flag and damaged his pickup truck. A 13-year-old teenager said that he and some friends were chased by “several” trucks displaying the Confederate flag.
“It’s getting out of hand,” one area resident said. “I don’t want something detrimental to happen in Gaston County that could have been prevented.”
A YouTube video posted Sunday shows a flag-carrying man in Columbia, South Carolina, being chased and beaten by a group that appears to be mostly black. In the same city, USA Today reported, fights broke out at a rally over the flag. It is unclear if the incident depicted in the YouTube video was part of that rally.
The flag became a focal point of contention after the tragic shooting in a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina. For many, like the NAACP, the flag represents racism and hate. But for many others, the flag represents Southern heritage. As a result of the shooting, retailers like Walmart have stopped selling the flag and groups like the NAACP have demanded that anything related to the old Confederacy — including monuments — be removed from public view.
One man, a black supporter of the flag, was killed while on his way home from a pro-Confederate rally. According to reports, the truck he was driving was run off the road by a group chasing them in another vehicle. NAACP leaders have so far remained silent over the man’s death.
