Just what every woman wants to know – another cause of gaining weight. Now, apparently even modern technology can cause women to become overweight and obese according to a new study by researchers at Sweden’s Sahlgrenska Academy.
The study appeared in an article – “Leisure time computer use and overweight development in young adults – a prospective study” – in the scientific journal BMC Public Health, and involved more than 2,500 young adult women of normal weight between the ages of 20-24 and concluded that young women who play computer games are a new risk group for weight gain and obesity.
Essentially women in the study who played computer games for just one hour a day were more likely to gain weight over a five year period than women who did not play. According to researcher Sara Thomée, “The increased BMI in those who played computer games for more than two hours a day would for a young woman of average height and weight equal an additional weight gain of 8.16 lbs. That calculation takes other risk factors for obesity into account, such as age, occupation, total daily computer time, physical activity during free time, sleep and perceived social support.”
Men don’t count. That’s right. For some unknown reason that researchers have not yet determined, playing computer games did not cause men to become overweight or obese.
