An enjoyable evening obviously wasn’t had by all who chose to take in a new movie on Friday night, according to a Chicago Tribune report on Tuesday. Nor was it an enjoyable night for some guy who – believe it or not – chose to go to the movie theater to spend his time talking on his phone rather than listen to the movie! In New Lenox, Illinois – a south-southwest suburb of Chicago – the New Lenox Police Department found itself involved with an unusual incident. The police ended up arresting a man who would not stop talking on his cell phone during a movie.
One would think that any physical violence which occurred between a movie patron and the man on the phone would have come from the person trying to get the cell phone user to stop talking. But, it was quite the opposite. Quite incredibly, the man who was talking on the phone struck the 20-year-old man who was requesting quiet so he – and others – could hear and enjoy the movie that he and other patrons had paid to watch. However, the man on the phone completely ignored him when he asked him to stop talking.
Daniel Gutierrez, a 44-year-old man who resides on the 200 block of South Lincoln Street in the nearby town of Elwood, slapped a person who simply asked him to stop talking on his cell phone after a movie had started at a movie theater – The AMC Showplace 14 located at 1320 West Maple Street in New Lenox. For slapping the man who wanted quiet, Gutierrez was charged with misdemeanor battery, says the New Lenox Police Department. New Lenox Deputy Chief Robert Pawlisz said that the man who got slapped had asked Gutierrez several times to be quiet and turn his phone off. Gutierrez didn’t care what the man wanted and continued to disrupt the movie by continuing to talk on his phone. That’s when the man who eventually got slapped complained to one of the movie theater’s employees about Gutierrez making noise. The police got a call about the incident shortly before 11 p.m.
After the employee approached Gutierrez, he got off of his phone – for the moment. After the theater employee left the area, Gutierrez got back on his phone again. The complainant asked Gutierrez once again to get off of his phone and to put it away. That’s when Gutierrez hauled off and slapped him. Gutierrez was arrested and released on a signature bond, according to Chief Pawlisz. According to the Herald-News, the movie that was playing with the movie that ended up being the number one box office hit of the past weekend, “Straight Outta Compton.” If the judge in the case enjoys a nice evening out at the movie theaters like most people do, Gutierrez is probably going to end up doing some hard time!
