The college football Top 25 coaches poll released their updated rankings on Sunday. With six undefeated teams left in the country, the College Football Playoff is certain to have at least two 1-loss teams in the postseason. As of now, there are five teams with a loss in the Top 10 of the coaches poll.
Whether it’s Cardale Jones or J.T. Barrett at quarterback, the No.1 Ohio State Buckeyes continued their 22 game winning streak. The Buckeyes outlasted the Minnesota Golden Gophers by 14 points on Saturday night. Despite the Buckeyes lofty ranking all season, they were not part of the high profile games entering the weekend.
Instead, the No.2 Clemson Tigers moved up three spots in the Top 25 Coaches Poll after a 10 point victory over No.18 Florida State Seminoles. The victory gave the Tigers ACC Atlantic title. Coming into the weekend, the Tigers were the No.1 team in the College Football Playoff rankings.
With the No.3 Baylor Bears defeating Kansas State on Thursday, their seven point victory wasn’t enough to stay in last week’s position. The Bears dropped a spot, but they still have their toughest part of the schedule remaining. They’ll be facing No.11 Oklahoma Sooners in the game of the week.
Meanwhile No.5 Oklahoma State Cowboys knocked off No.12 TCU Horned Frogs, and jumped up five spots. All of a sudden the Cowboys are the second highest ranked Big 12 team in the coaches poll.
The No.4 Alabama Crimson Tide may have had the most complete win of the day. The Crimson Tide dominated the No.9 LSU Tigers, and they now have the clear path the SEC Championship game. Alabama held Leonard Fournette to 31 rushing yards. The Crimson Tide are the highest ranked 1-loss team.
The rest of the Top 10 includes No.6 Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and No.7 Stanford Cardinal. The Fighting Irish will play the Cardinal in the regular season finale. Both teams could be in the Top 4 by the time the game takes place.
The No.8 Iowa Hawkeyes are the second ranked Big Ten team, but they still have their undefeated streak going. If they win out, they’ll move up the rankings.
The No.10 Florida Gators moved up two spots after an ugly win over Vanderbilt. They needed a late field goal, and a defensive stop to earn the SEC East title.
The No.16 Houston Cougars are the highest rated Group of Five team in college football. However, as we’ve seen with Memphis, no game is cake-walk in the American Athletic Conference. Despite the win over Cincinnati, the Cougars only moved up two spots.
The biggest losers in the Top 25 Coaches Poll were the Horned Frogs and No.25 Memphis Tigers. They both dropped nine spots in the current rankings. Meanwhile, the No.14 Michigan State Spartans fell eight spots after their controversial loss to Nebraska.
