Colin Farrell talked weight gain this week for a new film role, and while the very idea might sound like a dream come true for some avid eaters, putting on 40 pounds was no easy task for the actor. The “True Detective” star says that he had to stack on all of those added calories by eating massive amounts of food, including downing numerous cheeseburgers and vats of melted ice cream. Star Pulse News describes Farrell’s experience putting on all that weight this Sunday, May 24, 2015, adding that the experience really hit home in regards to his self-identity.
It’s certainly not easy to be an A-list actor, and Colin Farrell can attest to one particular challenge for him off the movie set: weight gain. In order to put on an intense 40 pounds for his leading role in “The Lobster” in a relatively short amount of time, Farrell said that he was forced to take some extreme measures. One of these severe food measures sounds especially unappetizing – gulping down pint after pint of melted ice cream.
He may be used to healthy eating and overall living with a positive and wholesome well-being in mind, but Colin revealed he needed to go through heavy weight gain fast for the important film role as a lonely man in the hotly anticipated drama alongside co-star Rachel Weisz. The methods he took might actually leave some readers with a bit of a stomachache.
“I would put the ice cream in the microwave to melt and drink it,” Farrell revealed in a statement to the press. “Two cheeseburders, fries and Coca-Colas, and two slices of chocolate cake at 10am is not that fun – and I love cheeseburgers.”
Yet Colin Farrell’s weight gain wasn’t simply a passing experience for him. Sport Act News notes that the actor felt him putting on all of those pounds was actually an eye-opening endeavor, and one that truly hit home in terms of self-reflection, identity, and how he views himself. The actor said it wasn’t the physical changes that made the biggest difference to him—pun intended—but the inner feelings.
“It makes you aware of how you’ve identified being a certain way,” he added. In light of this, it may not come as too much of a surprise to many Farrell fans that the actor was completely floored when he at last saw himself (a full 40 pounds heavier) on the silver screen at the Cannes premiere of the feature movie recently. He said it was unbelievably strange to witness how all of that weight had altered and temporarily defined him. “I gasped,” said Colin. “I’d forgotten what it looked like!”
The humorous “True Detective” actor did take a moment to showcase his trademark humor, however, in a statement about the pop culture emphasis on fathers today needing to attain a good-looking physique for all to see. Colin Farrell says that even putting his weight gain needs for film roles aside, staying in perfect shape is never easy when one is a truly involved dad. After all, he joked, there simply isn’t always time to fit in exercise, find the right foods, and maintain a perfect “dad bod” when one has kids to worry about on a daily basis. “A dad bod is a physical manifestation of our sacrifice to our children,” he said.
