A cloaked figure haunting a Gastonia, NC neighborhood turns out to just be a school-aged drama student. The cloaked, pale-faced mystery female was photographed over the last few weeks wandering around Gastonia’s Hudson Woods apartment complex.
Reports were made to local police, and panic busted out from Twitter users, who called the figure everything from a satanic, meat-offering cultist, to a pre-Halloween carnivorous Emperor Palpatine, to a person attempting to poison poo-dropping dogs with toxins stuffed in ground beef.
Writes TMZ: “The creepy figure supposedly dropping raw meat off around children’s playgrounds in Gastonia, North Carolina has been unmasked. The cloaked person that freaked out an entire town – and tons of people on social media – was just a college kid working on a school project.”
Not sure what kind of project calls for a black, floor-length robe and the dispersing of meat around an apartment complex playground, but that’s the explanation given by the mother, who was concerned after social media exploded over the unidentified specter.
We wrote about this social media figure yesterday, and after the rampant hullabaloo, it appears mom decided to weigh in.
CNN on Aug. 25 reported: “Used to be, back in the day, a fella would show up on your door all dressed in white and bring you fresh milk. These days? We get the creepy, cloaked raw-meat delivery…thing.”
“A cloaked figure in North Carolina was photographed leaving raw meat near a playground. So sleep isn’t happening now,” one Twitter user posted.
While most just laughed it off, those who live nearby spoke of genuine concern over the motives of the veiled stranger. “I see why it could be easy to make a joke out of it, but this is serious,” local Brooke Conrad said. “We live in a world today where you don’t know what’s going on and you don’t know people.”
Lance Calhoun, the director of operations for Southwood Realty, which owns the apartment, said earlier this week: “We don’t know if it’s one of our residents with an interesting way of presenting themselves, or if it’s a trespasser.”
Calhoun later told the Gaston Gazette that the girl’s mom contacted him with a “logical explanation” for the figure’s strange appearance.
“It looks like we have a logical explanation for all of this. It looks like some visiting college kids were working on a school project,” he said. “She contacted the property and said it was her daughter working on something related to school. She was concerned that with all the undue attention the photos have now received she would get into trouble at school. She was dressing up like a TV character. Completely innocent, completely harmless, but social media does what social media does.”
So case solved, and social media users can get back to other unanswered, cryptic mysteries.
