The Season of Giving
This is an all too familiar season. As it gets colder outside and most of us prepare for the joy of the holidays beginning with Thanksgiving, thoughts also turn to those struggling in our neighborhood area. The two main activities Christ the Redeemer participates in during the cold weather and holiday seasons are the LINK Food Drives and the Giving Tree. This year, an additional cold weather coat and shoes drive was added in connection with the Third Annual Nativity Pageant.
The Boy Scouts assisted LINK in collecting area donations and transporting them to participating sites. Collections were tallied at around 36,000 pounds of food delivered to participating sites. During the week of December 15-21, several groups of volunteers including Junior and Senior High Youth helped sort out several hundred bags of canned goods and non-perishable boxed items for food insecure families in the area. Food was distributed on Saturday, November 21st. Trinity Presbyterian Church paired with Christ the Redeemer to help sort and distribute food from their location as well.
The official wrap-up numbers from LINK stand at 709 families served. An additional $20,800 in cash (usually in the form of pre-paid grocery cards) was given out along with 2000+ Coats that were collected from the clothing drive. The families served come from a larger number of some 2105 registered adults, 1786 registered children and 3976 registered individuals. Between the pre-registration phase and the distribution phase, some 9%-13% fail to show. This may be due to obtaining employment, but it could also be due to needing to move elsewhere.
Still in the Giving Spirit: You Still Can Help
Christ the Redeemer GIVING TREE program continues until Sunday December 6th. Stop by Atonement Hall and visit the tree to see what items are still needed. These are typically clothing for individuals from infants all the way up to adults. Other special items, such as toiletries, diapers, or formula may also be needed. Bring purchased items back to the church unwrapped by the deadline.
LINK will gear up again for its pre-Christmas food distribution to be held Saturday December 19th. Food Sorting will be held starting Sunday, December 13th. Once again, canned and non-perishable items will be needed to restock. Cash and check offerings made out to LINK as well as pre-paid grocery cards, are also welcome and very necessary.
