Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders fame has some thoughts on rape that are going over like a lead balloon online today. Hynde believes there are certain scenarios where the blame can also fall to the rape victim. Hynde, 63, said that if you’re hanging out with a guy who is wearing “I Heart Rape” and “On Your Knees” badges on his jacket, you are asking for trouble.
According to MSN Entertainment News on August 31, Hynde’s comments started an explosion online and were condemned by the charity called Victim Support. This group maintains that “victims shouldn’t blame themselves.”
Director of Victim Support, Lucy Hastings said: “Victims of sexual violence should never feel or be made to feel that they were responsible for the appalling crime they suffered – regardless of circumstances or factors which may have made them particularly vulnerable.”
Hastings went on to say, “They should not blame themselves or be blamed for failing to prevent an attack – often they will have been targeted by predatory offenders who are responsible for their actions.”
Hynde recalled her own sexual attack in younger days and says she takes “full responsibility” for what happened to her. At 21-years-old she was sexually attacked in Ohio, and while she didn’t go into details during this interview with The Sunday Times, she did write about it in her recently completed autobiography, “Reckless.”
She was promised by a motorcycle gang that they were taking her to a party, but instead they took her to an abandoned house where they forced her into performing sexual acts. Hynde said, “Technically speaking, however you want to look at it, this was all my doing and I take full responsibility,” said Hyde, who also confessed to being on drugs at the time.
Hynde apparently believes that some rape victims are putting themselves in harm’s way and then dumping the entire blame on the attacker. She doesn’t see it that way, she sees some blame falling back on the victim if you willingly put yourself in a situation where rape is highly possible.
Online comments were mostly striking out at Hynde for what they thought was backward thinking. Here are a couple of things reflecting what commenters had to say:
“Thing about rapists is that they’re rapists. They don’t care what victims wear. Their impulse is to rape. They’re rapists. Chrissie Hynde”, wrote Jill.
Then there was this one comment from Stephanie, who may have hit the nail on the head when saying, “People criticizing Chrissie Hynde for her comments are overlooking that she is a victim and this is self blame. I feel v sorry for her tbh.”
