When Caterina Scorsone first appeared on Grey’s Anatomy, playing the role of Amelia Shepard, she was seen as the intelligent, rambunctious, and adventurous sister of Derek Shepard. Her first appearance was in season seven episode three where it was revealed that she was a fellow neurosurgeon like her brother Derek. Her character glimmered on the screen with a piercing disposition and by the episode’s conclusion she exited to later emerge on another Rhimes helmed series Private Practice. While watching the pivotal character on Private Practice, the audience collected morsels of her past and peered as she tried to assemble her jumbled present. She had a history of drug addiction, a revolving rotation when it came to relationships, and heartbreakingly lost a child to a severe pre-natal disorder.
When she came back to Grey’s Anatomy in season ten, and was later promoted to a series regular at the beginning of season eleven, viewers wondered about the direction of her character and how she would fit into the eclectic cast. Caterina Scorsone’s acting prowess permeated throughout the season as her character Amelia once again became struck by abysmal incident with the death of her brother. Scorsone’s ability to display the diverse catalogue of the human emotional spectrum made her character tangible and textured all the complex crevices of Amelia’s personality with allure and depth. Amelia etched her own space in the in the world of Grey’s anatomy, assimilating with other strong-willed, gifted, and innovative female character’s that have become a foundation and standard on the prolific series. Caterina Scorsone’s brilliance has made her transition to Grey’s Anatomy seamless. She has corralled a character who is often been the product of circumstance and underlined her with a strength that will hopefully allow her to start dictating them in the future.
