On tonight’s episode of “Catch a Contractor,” former contractor and now comedian Adam Carolla and his friends, licensed home-improvement contractor Skip Bedell and his beautiful private investigator wife, Alison are going after the worst contractors in America. On this episode titled “Flim Flam Swim Scam,” Adam, Skip and Alison and their teams are on the job to hunt down the dirty low-downs that screw over trusting people, and with a bit of luck, force them to complete the jobs they left unfinished. If they cannot find these people, they will finish the job and help the family take legal action against these dirtbags.
The disclaimer that flashed across the screen stated that the following took place over 18 days. A team of 46 people, including private investigators, assembled in an attempt to take down a dishonest contractor and help the people who were wronged. The production crew met with Adam and Skip to give them the lowdown on the entire situation.
Adam and Skip met with Beth and her neighbor Adam. Beth was in a bad car accident ten years ago requiring an artificial bone transplant requiring three years and five surgeries and loss of her mobility. Her doctor recommended a swimming pool to help regain what she lost. She felt fortunate to find one for $5,000 which left her backyard a disgrace. Adam’s daughter Emma helped clean it up a bit and made it safer, because this contractor left it an accident ready to happen.
The contractor’s bid was $4,995 for a therapy pool and installation. He gave her $100 off and she paid him the full amount of $4,895. Winston is the contractor and his technician is Paul. He sold her a used pool online and Paul the technician was to assemble it and install it. When the guys saw the pool, they knew it was a disaster in the making. There was no concrete foundation reinforced with rebar underneath it, and Paul asked her if she had the DVD with installation instructions.
Skip and Adam told the production team about the dangerous situation and Alison along with members of her team attempted to track down Winston. His address was a vacant lot, but found another address listed, which led them to another dead end. The third address for him a vehicle matching Beth’s description showed up. Alison made a date for Winston to meet with her husband for a spa installation. He arrived in a car, while a truck was following him. He walked up to the house, but the person in the truck remained in the truck. When Winston knocked on the door, the sting began. When he saw the cameras, he walked outside. There Adam and Skip questioned him and he denied taking money from Beth and said that he farmed out the installation. He stated that he sold her the item, and paid the installer to put it in for her. He said that she was wacky there was a problem between her and the installer and he has nothing to do with it.
When Adam gave him his three options; give the money back, return and make it right, or go to court, he chose to make it right and said that the viewers on television would see the truth. When they returned to Beth’s house, Winston was trying to smooth over the transaction. He said that he sold the item to Beth and she was going to show Paul how to install it. She has no idea how it goes together and Skip asked about the amperage for the operation of the pool, which he hedged around. The pool would require an upgrade in electrical work to truly work properly, something neither seller nor installer was aware of.
When Winston continued to refer to Paul as the person responsible for the screw ups on this job, he called him to have him come there to assess the situation. He did not want cameras on him as he called him, but neglected to remove his microphone while he called him. They listened quietly as he coached Paul as to what to say when they question him about the half-assed job he did. Winston told him to discredit the woman about everything that went wrong. Adam Carolla could hardly contain himself about the fact that they heard everything Winston told Paul. They will spring this on him later and Adam said to consider it an M-80 in your birthday cake.
After a phone call from producers, Paul agreed to come and tell his side of the story. Skip asked why he would put the pool on the ground without any reinforcements. They pointed out the bricks under the pool and Adam called Paul a moron. The conversation continued as each contradicted the other in attempt to avoid the blame. When Beth heard lie after lie, she finally came out of hiding after listening to all this and made her case. Winston told her she had Alzheimer’s because she forgot the events that led up to the debacle. Adam sent her away for a few days to relax while they made it right.
When they showed Winston the plans to install the pool correctly, they felt like it was a pigeon looking at a Rubik’s Cube. When they asked him how many eighths were in one inch, he had no idea, they told him there were eight. Later on Skip asked him how many thirty-seconds were in one inch and he was clueless. They continued to bust his chops throughout the entire redo and Winston kept his cool.
When Beth returned with Adam and Emma they were blown away at the delightful change in her yard. It was a new pool from Endless Pools and it contained a treadmill under the water for more exercise. The yard looked amazing with furniture and new turf. But there was one more thing; as Winston tried to bull crap his way through his lame explanation. Then they played his phone call to Paul and he still had no change in attitude. Adam called him a sociopath as he had no remorse about the matter at hand. When it was time for him to depart, he continued his lame explanations that made no sense. But now Beth continues to use her equipment and is making great progress. Paul no longer works with Winston as told on this episode of “Catch a Contractor.”
