There are many people in the world that have a dream to be the next big star. Shows like American Idol, The Voice and other programs give unknowns the chance to be the singing superstar they want to be. Look at Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Jennifer Hudson, they made their way after pounding the pavement to have someone say, “Yes you’ve got it.” The Philadelphia area is no exception. Hall and Oates, The Roots, and the Hooters all got their start in our area. We can add a new name to list of Philadelphia area artists that are going through, Carly Moffa, a young woman with determination, guts and a voice unspoiled by auto- tune is our next great superstar.
Carly Moffa is a Williamstown, NJ native who has emerged as a talented singer songwriter who knew from an early age she would have to find her way to Nashville, which she did when she was only 18. I met Carly this past summer as she toured with original music and even a few covers at the Golden Nugget Casino and Hotel. She captivated those in the audience with her refreshing, untainted voice. You may not know Carly yet, but you will. Carly has always known music would be her life. At only 18, she left her home to follow her dreams to live in the country music capital of the world, Nashville. There Moffa honed her skills as a songwriter and performer. One song in particular, ‘Hitman’, resonates with a great hook, (yea, they call me the Hitman, shooting hearts for a living, loving and killing”), some bluesy vocals which showcases the use of Moffa’s voice from slight which draws the listener in, and then they are charmed with a subdued sexiness that leaves you wanting more. The Hitman, indeed.
Moffa describes her songwriting as “writing music is my coping mechanism, like a moon that lasts into the next morning’s daylight, which makes you feel the illusion that yesterday is not lost that an old love is not lost; it kind of keeps the heartbeat of the past from flat lining, which only leaves a person with unjust ideas of augmented scenarios that would land them in a different place. But if the heartbeat is still going, then that whole process is avoided.” Listening to Carly’s voice you are reminded of the vocal talents of Linda Ronstadt, Stevie Nicks or one of the best female singer songwriters ever, Carole King. From the first moment you hear Carly’s voice you know it. You know she has “it.” She is a country singer whose roots are in the backyard of New Jersey. Moffa’s voice is an unspoiled threat to all those who have to use auto tune. There is no complication, there is no pretense, this young woman who has a voice that is refreshing.
Preforming Carly’s spirit shines through as does her drive and love for music. Carly describes her love of music as this, “Music’s force to change what is, impression thoughts, feelings, and actions. I have never loved anything as intensely as I do music. Music holds me. Its ability to transcend on us at our weakest moments, and the challenge it never ceases to present. I became fascinated with music because of the feeling it gave me, and now I decide to say “yes” to love it every day through crap storms and blood red skies. And then there’s that whole brilliant sensation that even when this life makes me numb, I can always feel music. It makes me figure out why I do life, and cushions the blow.”
