Congressional Democrats yesterday reminded American voters why they are called the Party of Gun Control: they earn it with such moves as Monday’s separate letters – signed by more than 120 House and Senate Dems – to President Barack Obama, asking him to take executive action on gun control.
While the Huffington Post story put the number at “more than 120” Democrats signing one or the other letter, United Press International, quoted by GOPUSA, placed the figure at “nearly 140.” By either count, the signatures of those politicians should make it more difficult, if not impossible, for moderate, pro-gun Democrats to garner votes from gun owning constituents.
This came as Newsmax was reporting about anti-gun Sen. Charles Schumer’s vow to the Brady Center last Friday that Democrats will bring a “universal background check” measure to the floor of the Senate early next year. And White House spokesman Josh Earnest was being widely quoted for having suggested that Americans spend part of their time at family gatherings on Thanksgiving Day to talk about gun control.
Critics have been quick to suggest this is aimed at deflecting public attention away from the president’s failed policies to contain or defeat terrorism in the Middle East before it comes to this country. One might argue this push on gun control underscores just how out-of-touch leading Democrats, and the Obama administration, are. The Middle East is exploding, the economy isn’t doing so hot – with the exception of lower gas prices – and all these people want to talk about is how to erode the Second Amendment, and penalize honest gun owners.
Last week, as reported by The Hill, National Rifle Association spokeswoman Jennifer Baker said it was “appalling that anti-gun politicians are exploiting the Paris terrorist attacks to push their gun-control agenda and distract from President Obama’s failed foreign policy.” Appalling, perhaps, but considering yesterday’s Capitol Hill letters, not surprising.
It was not always this way, and where some Democrats are concerned, it isn’t even now. Those Democrats still believe there are ten amendments in the Bill of Rights. They own guns. They hunt, shoot, compete, collect and enjoy firearms. Some even reload their own ammunition, and there are even Democrats who are not shy about supporting concealed carry because they are packing.
But the party leadership has tilted so far left that it walks sideways through the halls of Congress. They taint the moderates, who could face tough re-election prospects because people are wise to the fact that if they elect moderates, it will assure that the extremists will be back in control.
Schumer and his fellow Democrats seem to forget – or maybe it’s that they want everyone else to forget – that most recent mass shooters in this country passed background checks. Others stole guns from those who did pass background checks.
If there is talk about gun control on Thanksgiving, maybe it should focus on why leading Democrats are so obsessed with the subject. What is it about the Second Amendment that so bothers the party? Isn’t it time for the party to find another political whipping boy?
