Cape Town had some unusual cloud formations in the sky over the weekend and these clouds were not only unusual looking, but some referred to them as resembling UFOs. Many of the folks who witnessed the Cape Town clouds posted the unusual images they captured in photos online. Some UFO enthusiasts believe that UFOs have the ability to disguise themselves as clouds, but that wasn’t the case this weekend!
Some theorize that the aliens study the Earthlings with their high-tech instruments, which are far more advanced than anything seen on Earth. They do this while they stay hidden in clouds, so some theories claim. It wouldn’t make much sense for aliens wanting to hover inconspicuously over Earth to do so in a cloud that draws so much attention! You probably wouldn’t want to look like a UFO cloud if you are hiding a UFO.
While this makes a cool fairy-tale and some might say these folks watch too many movies, these UFO-like clouds have a perfectly sound scientific explanation. News Max reports on November 10 that CNN meteorologist Derek Van Dam offered up an explanation that is void of little green men.
Van Dam posted the details on these clouds on his Facebook page over the weekend. Van Dam said:
“These are fairly common clouds known as stratocumulus standing lenticularis (or commonly known as Lenticular Clouds).”
“They form when conditions are just right. Air flows along the surface of the earth and reaches some sort of obstruction like a mountain or valley. Probably in this case, Table Mountain, Signal Hill or even the Overberg Mountains upstream from Cape Town.”
Van Dam said the air flow is disrupted by the obstructions that the mountains are causing and this creates what is know as “wind eddies” in weather lingo. Van Dam goes on to say:
“When this disrupted air flow has stable moist air within it, a series of large-scale standing waves can develop on the downwind side. Eventually the temperature at the peak of the wave drops to the dew point allowing for condensation and eventually your star-ship enterprise forms.”
It looks like the folks who are experts in weather have rained on the UFO enthusiasts parade as these are not UFOs disguised as clouds, but clouds disguised as UFOs! Even Van Dam referred to these clouds as looking like the “Starship Enterprise.” He also said that while they are unusual, this is not a rare occurrence in this neck of the woods.
CNN News reports that these clouds that were seen over Cape Town, South Africa, became more and more defined as time went on, according to the folks observing the clouds from the ground in that city . Because the clouds are so bizarre-looking, they never fail to stir up the UFO references and get folks snapping away with their cameras.
