According to the Associated Press on Wednesday, Canada beat China 8-2 in men’s water polo at the 2015 World Aquatics Championship in Kazan, Russia. With the win, Canada improves to one win and one loss in the Pool A standings. The top two teams from the 16 team tournament (except for Brazil, Serbia and the United States) advance to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
The Canadian team was led by Jared McElroy of Calgary, Alberta with three goals. Con Kudaba of New Westminster, British Columbia had two goals. Other Canadian goal scorers were Oliver Vikalo of Calgary, Alberta, Nicolas Constantin-Bicari of Montreal, Quebec and Justin Boyd of Beaconsfield, Quebec.
Team Canada opened the tournament with a 12-7 loss to Croatia. They will next play Brazil on Friday. Brazil has already qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games in men’s water polo because they are the host country.
Canada missed a glorious opportunity to qualify for the men’s water polo tournament at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, but lost 9-8 in the semifinals of the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto. The United States then went on to beat Brazil 11-9 in the gold medal game.
In women’s water polo, Canada finished pool play of the 2015 World Aquatics Championships with a record of two wins and one loss. Canada beat New Zealand 15-6 and Kazakhstan 17-4 before losing 12-6 to Spain. Canada will now play Greece in the first round of the playoffs on Saturday. Unlike the men, the women’s water polo tournament at the 2015 World Aquatics Championship in Kazan, Russia is not an Olympic qualifier.
