In news released yesterday, the Onslow County Sheriff’s Department said they have arrested a 37-year-old Camp Lejeune Marine on allegations that he raped a child. Deputies say Master Sgt. Tyson Spencer of Jacksonville, North Carolina, was arrested Wednesday afternoon.
The Marine is charged with first degree rape of a child, first degree sex offense with a child, two counts of indecent liberties with a child, and two counts of felony child abuse involving a sexual act. It was not known if the child was a family member, however, the Sheriff’s Department said the victim is someone who is known to the man and that allegations date back to 2013.
Spencer did not appear in court and is being held at the Onslow County jail on $500,000 bond. No date has been set for his day in court.
A spokesperson for the Marine base said Spencer had been in the Corps since 1996. The engineer equipment chief has been deployed three times, once to Iraq and twice to Afghanistan.
Yesterday, the Olympian in Washington State, released information that a 27-year-old Joint Base Lewis McChord Soldier had also been arrested for child rape. When the Soldier discovered that one of his victims, age 10, had confided the rapes to her grandmother he checked himself into the psychiatric wing at Madigan Army Hospital. Local law enforcement arrested the suspect when he was released from the hospital. He is being held on $100,000 bail. There are at least two victims in this case.
Last month, another JBLM Soldier was arrested for the rape of his 7-year-old stepdaughter. Nicholas Carlin, a 28-year-old Army specialist was lodged in jail pending a $200,000 bail. His case has not come to trial.
