A pastor’s son will tell you that he is alive today because of a butt dial that beckoned Siri, which set the wheels in motion to get him help when he was trapped under his truck. Even Sam Ray’s doctors are referring to this case as “the butt dial that saved his life.” Ray heard a noise under his truck that he needed to investigate, so he cranked it up on a jack and crawled underneath to check it out, but the jack fell apart sending the 5,000 pound truck crashing down upon him.
He was stuck, crushed and in massive pain and he was alone at his Murfreesboro, Tennessee, home at the time of this accident, according to Sports Act News on August 15. He is well aware of Siri going off at the most inopportune times when the bumps of daily life beckon her to the surface of his cell phone, but this is one time that he was thrilled Siri came through on her own.
The 18-year-old felt like his leg was breaking under the truck and while making an attempt to move his leg Suri was jarred from her technological slumber while tucked into his pocket. Siri’s voice asked “What can I help you with?” According to Digital Trends News, Ray’s command to Suri was to “Call 911″ and call 911, she did! Ray said, “When I heard a woman talking from inside my pocket, I just started shouting.” He also said that “I didn’t know if she could hear me or not, but I heard her say that help was just around the corner.”
The dispatcher who answered the call said she yelled as loud as she could hoping whoever was on the other line could hear her as she promised help was on the way. Another thing Ray did that helped get the rescue crew to him in a timely fashion was to yell out his address. Christina Lee who was the Rutherford County dispatcher on the phone listening to Ray said they pinged his cell phone for an address, but they got the wrong location. So Ray screaming out his address brought the rescue crew right to him instead of trying to locate him, which would have taken longer.
He was trapped under the truck for 40 minutes, which must have seemed like eternity while in so much pain. A volunteer firefighter used a jack to elevate the truck and remove Ray who was then airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, which is about 40 miles away from his home. Doctors report that Ray suffered three broken ribs, a bruised kidney, and second- and third-degree burns to one of his arms, which was stuck under the truck’s exhaust pipe. He is alive and walking and for that he thanks God, after all he is a pastor’s son and as much as Siri was there to help, he knew it was the big guy upstairs watching out for him!
