“I have cancer,” says Brooks Ayers, the now ex-boyfriend of “Real Housewives of Orange County” star Vicki Gunvalson, in an interview last night with Entertainment Tonight. Gunvalson and Ayers, who were together at the time the current season of RHOC was filmed, have since broken up as a result of the tension caused by Gunvalson’s co-stars continuously questioning his cancer diagnosis. Ayers, who reportedly broke up with Gunvalson, has since moved to Florida in attempt to get a “fresh start.”
Ayers, who claims he has been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (a type of blood cancer), Stage 3, and says he will be returning to Los Angeles in October for more treatment. Gunvalson has never questioned Ayers in regards to his cancer claims, but her co-stars appear to be having a hard time believing it.
Rookie cast member Meghan Edmonds, in particular, has been rigorous in her efforts to discover the truth about Ayers’s cancer claims. Edmonds, 31, has called the doctor that Ayers claimed was giving him reservitrol treatments as an alternative treatment for his cancer because, according to Ayers, the chemotherapy was not working. According to Edmonds, that doctor does not treat cancer. Edmonds even went so far as to contact Ayers’s ex-girlfriend (who she did not know) to ask her about a comment she left on a blog post that claimed Ayers has previously lied about having cancer.
Once Ayers became aware of this, he and Gunvalson confronted Edmonds about her unwelcome detective work on him, which Ayers expressed surprise and disgust for. “I’ve met you twice…” he told Edmonds in a RHOC episode that aired last week. “It’s odd to me.”
But Edmonds was unfazed and refused to recant. “I’m a lover of knowledge and truth,” she explained with a taunting smile.
From the looks of next week’s episode, it seems more of the above will continue. In the preview clip, Ayers attempts to provide proof that he is telling the truth about having cancer by providing a piece of paper that he claims is a PET scan. However, things are brought back into question when Edmonds says she called the place that Ayers claimed to have gotten his PET scan and found that they do not do PET scans.
While Edmonds may be the most rigorous, she is far from the only RHOC cast member to express doubts over Ayers cancer diagnosis. Her co-stars, Shannon Beaudor, Tamra Judge and Heather DuBrow have also expressed doubts to varying degrees, though none of them have gone out of their way investigate Ayers’s claims the way Edmonds has.
On last night’s episode, Beaudor said she believed that if Ayers is, indeed, faking it, there is no way Gunvalson does not know about it. “Vicki is too smart of a woman,” said Beaudor.
Judge and DuBrow aren’t so sure. DuBrow mused that it’s possible that maybe, she was duped at first then, at the “eleventh hour” realized she was “in too deep” not to keep going. Judge said that while she believes Ayers is certainly capable of lying to that degree, she has a hard time believing Vicki would be in on it, but also stated she did not know what to believe anymore.
“I think they do it to create drama — manufactured drama and that’s sad to me,” says Ayers. “I’ve distanced myself in a lot of ways from it. It’s useless drama that brings on stress that quite frankly no one needs and in particular my situation. I’m not running from anything.”
