There are few places in New England where shopping and girlfriends getaways get any better than in North Conway, NH. Add in a stay at a beautiful Jackson, NH inn, and you’ve got the perfect girlfriends getaway. But wait! It gets even better when you add in tax-free shopping in New Hampshire (no sales tax in stores) and then “Bring A Friend” weekend at Settlers Green Outlet Village. Now in its 15th year, the annual Bring A Friend Weekend is so popular, they’ve expanded it to two weekends with Bring A Friend Too coming up Nov. 13-15, 2015! Make your plans to enjoy a girlfriend’s getaway this weekend and you’ll see all that’s in store (yup! I meant that pun!) for great holiday shopping.
I’m a good shopper; a true bargain hunter. My 14-year-old daughter loves to shop too, so we decided that Bring A Friend Weekend at Settlers Green Outlet Village would be the perfect time for a little holiday shopping getaway. We made reservations at The Wentworth, An Elegant Country Inn in nearby Jackson, NH. I’ve stayed at the Wentworth for romantic getaways and also enjoyed a stay with a larger group in their condos. This time, we had the pleasure of staying at the main inn. Enter The Wentworth, and you know from the moment you walk into the lobby that it’s the ideal place for everyone from honeymoon or anniversary couples to families. With a warm fire burning, and plenty of areas for groups to gather in and around the lobby, the ambiance is infectious. I saw many guests meeting for the first time enjoying conversation around that lovely lobby fireplace.
Upon arrival, my daughter spied the pool table, and we enjoyed a rousing game of pool after dinner while a fun piano player sang and played in the adjoining bar. My daughter loved the very unusual back-lit menus in the dining room, ideal for the romantic setting in this sedate four-diamond setting. With its Certified Local Designation, the Wentworth Dining Room along with others who achieve this honor show they are committed to using New Hampshire farm products and promoting local farmers and food producers as evaluated by a rigorous and detailed point system. Those achieving a high score are then certified. The cuisine at the Wentworth is decidedly fine farm-to-table.
Our room with two of the most comfortable double beds was ideal. There was a small bonus sitting room with a pull-out couch which would have been perfect for even more girlfriends if we’d brought them. A large bathroom with a claw-foot tub and shower topped it off for us, along with all the amenities like a Keurig coffee maker, flat screen TV and complimentary Wi-Fi ( necessity when you travel with teenagers). We went to sleep with windows open enjoying the quiet breezes of a warm November evening.
Up early the next morning, we high-tailed it to Settlers Green to get in line for the famous bags handed out on Bring A Friend Weekend. We got to the mall at about 7:45am, and the line snaked around the entire center of the mall. I estimated at least 800 people were in line ahead of us. At 8:00am sharp, the line started moving, and it went very quickly. We got our bags in less than ten minutes. The bags were filled with little snacks, samples and plenty of coupons! Now it was time to shop and that we did!
We shopped for eight hours straight, hitting every store in Settlers Green and some across the street in Settlers Crossing too. We got clothes, gifts, books, toys, gadgets, housewares, kitchen items and more, mostly crossing off items on our Christmas lists. We took a fifteen minute break for delicious wraps at Wrapsody ‘N Greens and also took time to relax in the center-court tent where complimentary cider and iced tea was offered, but other than that we shopped until we literally dropped. We stayed motivated with the energizing music and announcements for raffle giveaways throughout the day, and used hashtag #ShopBAF to post photos on Instagram too.
The bargains were great, but the best part was my teenaged daughter’s comment about how much she enjoyed talking, shopping and being together. That was priceless. Need time with your teen? You can’t go wrong with a shopping trip to North Conway, NH and an overnight at The Wentworth. And for those with busy lives, spending time buying those special gifts and just what your daughter wants is about as good as it gets – from both the parent and the daughter’s point of view.
