Forecast discussion: A weak cold front passed through the region this afternoon, but the atmosphere over Boston is quite dry. There may be some passing showers in the next few hours, as radar does show some activity over eastern New York. Temperatures may rise another degree or two in the next few hours, as we have reached our high of 85 degrees as of 4:00 p.m. If you are an astronomy fan, this will be a perfect night to view the Perseid meteor shower. The skies will be clear to partly cloudy for a great viewing.
It will be delightful on Thursday, as a strong high pressure system brings bright sunshine, and some drier air, as the dewpoint temperatures decrease. However, this will be short lived, as winds will return to the southwest. This will allow moisture off the Gulf of Mexico to return into New England this weekend.
A weak cold front will try to pass through Southern New England from Canada on Saturday. We will see more clouds than sun, and there is the risk for some passing showers and thunderstorms. We will continue to see isolated showers until early Sunday morning, when the front dissipates. High pressure will bring back the bright sunshine. But, in the upper levels of the atmosphere, the winds will turn to the southwest. This will help increase our temperatures, as we reach the middle to upper 80’s for the weekend. We may reach 90 degrees or above early next week.
At the moment, the American model is creating scattered showers and thunderstorms all over Southern New England Monday and Tuesday. The model is having a lot of trouble handling the hot temperatures and high humidity. It feels the atmosphere will be too unstable, and create periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms. I feel the best chance for precipitation will be Wednesday, as a weak cold front approaches the region from the west.
