With media images constantly telling us we are not good enough, thin enough, fit enough and smart enough, at some point you need to stand up for your self esteem and realize you are who you are! With this in mind, here are six ways to improve your body confidence – and you may already be practicing them!
1. Think action before appearance. Focus on what your body can do rather than what your body looks like. In the continuum of health and fitness, exercise can help you change the look of your body but it takes six weeks before any visible differences occur. Don’t get discouraged, enjoy what you can do and as you do more and more, your body will reflect your efforts.
2. Stop negative talk. Whether you’re with a group of friends ready to chime in about how you’re feeling heavy today or just thinking that your butt looks big in these jeans, stop these negative thoughts and affirmations. Instead, compliment friends sincerely and be gracious if they offer one back. Don’t deny them the right to acknowledge and compliment you. Just say “thank you”. According to Dr. Robyn Silverman, Ph.D., body image expert and author of “Good Girls Don’t Get Fat: How Weight Obsession is Messing Up Our Girls”, “If a woman says, ‘I’m so fat,’ the other woman might feel like she has to say ‘No, I’m the fat one. Have you seen my thighs?” This back and forth elevates and both women feel negatively about their bodies.
3. Love your body. Stand in the mirror and identify the parts of your body that you really embrace. Don’t focus on the parts you want to change. Stay positive and say out loud what you love about yourself… You may say you have strong arms to hold your children or the ones you love instead of I have big arms.
4. Be your best friend. If you wouldn’t say it out loud to your best friend than you shouldn’t say it to yourself. Use the words of how you treat others to treat yourself. Compliment yourself when you can and be your own best friend.
5. Be prepared. You’ll feel more confident when you take the time to prep for each day. Rushing out the door with missed-matched socks or forgetting to put on accessories may make you feel out of sync all day long. Prepare your clothes, food and wake up alarm the night before instead of sleeping through the snooze and running late. You’ll have more body confidence if you are prepared for the day.
6. Perception is Reality. This holds true for almost everything. If you believe it can happen, it will. Think positive thoughts throughout the day and fake it ‘til you make it. It is so important to be who you want to be.. even if you’re really not there yet.
