The family of Bobbi Kristina Brown, the daughter of famed singers Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown and who has been in a coma since January, is livid that a family member’s heroic effort to gain a hopeful diagnosis has been hijacked. In fact, they want it known that Pat Houston, Bobbi Kristina’s aunt and co-guardian, had the 22-year-old flown to Chicago to be seen by a specialist — not Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry.
TMZ reported July 1 that Bobbi Kristina Brown’s family was up in arms over rumors that Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry had orchestrated a last-ditch effort to save Bobbi Kristina. The celebrity gossip website posted that a source close to the Houston and Brown families insist that the two celebrity powerhouses had absolutely nothing to do with the Chicago trip. In fact, they maintained that it was Pat Houston, who is married to Whitney Houston’s brother, had her niece flown to the Windy City to see a specialist in hopes that she could get a favorable diagnosis for the young woman, whose condition is reportedly deteriorating.
“They too confirmed what Atlanta doctors had been saying — that there was no hope,” the source reportedly told Fox411.com, which also reported that the trip to Chicago had been flown with Tyler Perry’s help. “That’s when she was taken off all meds and any artificial means of support.” That same source, according to the report, said that the trip had been the final factor in the family’s decision to take Bobbi Kristina off of her medication and to “go quietly.”
But the families are taking exception to the media reports, noting that Pat Houston arranged for her niece to be flown via MEDVAC plane to Chicago. TMZ said that the families felt as if the erroneous media reports were making them looking as if they were depending on charity from other celebrities to care for Bobbi Kristina when that just wasn’t the case at all.
However, the both Fox411.com and TMZ reported that the specialist had given the family the heartbreaking news that there was “no hope” for the young woman, who Atlanta doctors had said back in April, according to grandmother Cissy Houston (per E! News), had “global and irreversible brain damage and remains unresponsive.” Afterward, Bobbi Kristina had been moved to a hospice facility outside Atlanta.
It is unclear how the rumor got started that Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry got involved. Still, the family wanted to set the record straight on who had gone to heroic efforts to try and save Bobbi Kristina. And rightly so…
As for the accuracy of the Fox411.com report, it also mentioned that security had been increased around Bobbi Kristina Brown. A report from Entertainment Tonight would later refute that bit of information as well. Unfortunately, what security there is around the 22-year-old wasn’t strong enough to stop a subsequent report from TMZ that an “extended family member” was shopping around a “deathbed” photo of the comatose celebrity.
The young woman was found face-down in the bathtub of her suburban Atlanta home at the end of January, according to the Associated Press. Although given CPR and still alive by the time she made it to the hospital, doctors placed her in a medically induced coma. She has since been unresponsive.
Last week, Bobbi Kristina’s court-appointed conservator, Bedelia Hargrove, filed a civil lawsuit against Nick Gordon, the young woman’s long-time partner, for abusing her (and causing her present condition) and stealing from her estate while she has been in a coma. The district attorney is looking into the case to see if there is evidence with which to file criminal charges against Gordon as well.
