A Florida family is mourning the loss of their dog who was found brutally beaten to death with a handwritten note claiming responsibility for the dog’s death. WSVN News reported today that the Pomeranian, named Fox, was killed last week just outside his apartment building in Pembroke Pines, Florida.
The little dog, who was curled up in a ball, was found by a neighbor who was horrified by the note that sat atop the motionless dog’s body. The note had a smiley face drawn on it and stated, “We beat it 2 death lol hahaha.”
Fox’s family is horrified by the brutal death of their family member – and the Broward County Crime Stoppers are offering a reward of up to $3,000 for information that would lead to finding Fox’s killer. If you have information about this case, please call the Broward County Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-TIPS. All callers can remain anonymous.
According to Fox’s family, Fox went missing last Friday and wasn’t found again until a neighbor saw him on Saturday morning. Fox’s owner, Verline Bartheleny, noted the link between violence against nonhuman animals and humans – and why Fox’s killer needs to be found before he or she escalates any further. Bartheleny stated: “If someone could do that to a dog, just imagine what it could escalate to.”
Numerous studies have demonstrated the connection between animal abuse abuse and violent crimes committed against people. According to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), those who commit violent crimes against nonhuman animals are more likely to commit violent crimes against humans than those who don’t hurt animals. A three-year study conducted by the Chicago Police Department found a “startling propensity for offenders charged with crimes against animals to commit other violent offenses toward human victims.” The study, conducted from 2001 to 2004, found that 65% of those who had been arrested for crimes against animals had also been arrested for battery against a human.
The Animal Law Center found similar results, finding that “people who commit acts of cruelty towards animals rarely stop there. Murderers and people who abuse their spouse or children had frequently harmed animals in the past.”
The horror of Fox’s death is compounded by the cruel and taunting note – which haunts not only Fox’s family, but the neighbor who found the dog, as well. When a neighbor found Fox curled up in a ball accompanied by the note, he stated: “…I’m like, ‘Oh good! He found Fox.’ But then I saw the note, and it was just horrifying. I just started crying.”
Searching for answers, Fox’s family brought him to a veterinarian for an examination, where it was determined that the little dog had sustained punctured lungs when he was beaten. Police are currently investigating this case – and Fox’s family is mourning the senseless loss of a beloved family member.
