Blueberries are known as the “super food” by the nation’s nutritionists because of all the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that they provide. Now is a good time for Clevelanders to pick up some fresh blueberries at the local farmers’ markets. But if you want to celebrate the mighty blueberry and all the goodness it provides for your body then head down for the 13th annual Blueberry Festival in Lexington, Ohio (just south of Mansfield) running from Thursday, August 13 through Sunday, August 16.
This free Festival will be honoring the blueberry with lots and lots of blueberry food (some very unique items like blueberry chicken wraps, blueberry flatbread pizza, blueberry dessert stromboli and a blueberry sausage pancake on a stick, just to name a few) but there will also be a multitude of fun, family-friendly activities for all age groups to enjoy during the 4-day event.
You won’t want to miss the Blueberry Bash activities that include a pie eating contest, a blueberry spitting contest, a bubblegum blowing competition and water races. The big attraction at the Blueberry Bash is the Blueberry Stomp where, yes, people will be stomping blueberries with their bare feet to see who can stomp the fastest. Blueberry Bash activities will take place from 3:30 – 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Other attractions at the Festival include a Miss Blueberry pageant, a 5K Run/Walk, a Glow Run, a petting zoo, a volleyball bash, a Car & Bike show, a Blueberry Pet Idol Contest (Saturday at noon) and Big Wheel races (Big Wheels will be provided) and amusement rides Free, live musical entertainment will be provided by various bands and performers involving a wide range of musical genres. Performers include Electric Circus, Bad Remedy, The Back Porch Swing Band, Rock Brigade.Midnight Special – The Classic Rock Experience and Paul McCartney Through the Years tribute band.
Two parades will be held at this year’s Blueberry Festival — the Blue Lights and Bubble Parade being held on Thursday at 9 p.m. and the Mardi Gras Parade being held on Saturday at 2 p.m. Saturday visitors can start their Festival day with a pancake breakfast at the Senior Center and don’t miss the fireworks spectacular on Saturday evening at 10:10 p.m. (weather permitting).
Hours for the Lexington Blueberry Festival are 4 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, 9 a.m. – 10:30 p.m. on Friday, 7 a.m. – 10:45 p.m. on Saturday and 10:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free. The Blueberry Festival will be taking place at various venues in downtown Lexington, Ohio including the Lexington Community Park (200 Plymouth St.) and the Senior Center (67 E. Main St.). Lexington is 87 miles from Cleveland and it is approximately a 90 minute drive.
