Are you venturing out to holiday-shop for your crafty friends over Thanksgiving weekend? The big-box stores are not the only retailers offering Black Friday deals. Local yarn shops in the Chicago area are offering several incentives to shop this weekend. Black Friday, while nowadays beginning on Thanksgiving night, has some stores opening their doors earlier than normal. Small Business Saturday, the American-Express-sponsored shopping event for small businesses, also brings about the deals in many local yarn shops in Chicagoland.
Below is a roundup of stores around town having sales, specials, and fun events for post-Thanksgiving shopping. Stores are listed alphabetically:
Elemental Yarns: Both the Oswego and the Plainfield locations will be offering special holiday hours for Black Friday and Small business Saturday, and both stores will be closed on Thanksgiving day. Customers can come in for a Small Business Saturday “pick your present” discount, where a mystery discount will be unwrapped at the point of sale to receive a discount ranging from 10% to 30% off.
Idea Studio: In addition to offering cookies and punch to rejuvenate shoppers all day, this local yarn shop in La Grange is participating in the Plymouth Yarn coupon incentive, offering a $20-off coupon on a follow-up $50 purchase of Plymouth Yarn for every $50 spent on Small Business Saturday. Coupons are valid for the entire month of December. Also, Small Business Saturday will feature a trunk show for local artisanJoanna Beaumont’s collection, Joanna’s Jewelry, from 10:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. Christmas kits will also be 30% off the regular price for these shopping days.
Knitche: The pop-up boutique at Knitche, located in downtown Downers Grove, will house clothing from Squasht and Wulfka, and the items will be priced at 15% off from Black Friday to what Knitche staff calls “Sofa Sunday,” or the Sunday following Thanksgiving. The store will be open during their normal business hours throughout the weekend, excluding Thanksgiving Day, when they will be closed.
Mia Bella Yarn and Accessories: This Highland Park store will be offering what they bill as the “Best Black Friday and Saturday Sale Ever!” The sale will include 75% off all Clearance yarns; 30% off all full-priced yarns, accessories, and notions (excluding store-offered services); and 75% off all books, magazines, and single patterns. The store will be open from 10:00a.m. to 5:00p.m. on both Black Friday and Small Business Saturday.
Montoya Fiber Studio: Thanksgiving weekend signifies extended hours for the store, located just west of Northwestern University’s Ryan Field. They will open on Sundays from 1:00p.m. to 4:00p.m. from Thanksgiving weekend to the Sunday before Christmas, and their Small Business Saturday deals will include a list of yarns at 20% off just for the day. Throughout the weekend, Lambs Pride Bulky and Manos Wool Classica will also be offered at 30% off.
The Nook: After being closed on Thanksgiving day, The Nook in Lisle will be open normal business hours from Friday to Sunday during Thanksgiving weekend. Throughout the weekend, All Grundl/Four Seasons yarns will be marked at 30% off the regular price. With this yarn exclusive to The Nook in the Chicago area, this is an unusual opportunity to get an exclusive yarn line at a discount.
Sifu Design Studio: With news of Sifu, located in the Edgewater neighborhood, closing at the end of January, Sifu is changing its guidelines slightly, but they are still participating in the post-holiday shopping fun. Their annual Black Friday and Small Business Saturday sales will still happen, but there will be no vouchers issued for Cyber Monday classes, since the class schedule has a finite ending date.
Sister-Arts Studio: This Lincoln Park fixture is offering a different approach to Black Friday, offering a haven of help instead of a slew of deals on Friday. For only $10 per half-hour session, knitters and crocheters can drop into the studio for project and technique help. Open knit and crochet will occur from 12:00p.m. to 5:00p.m. as well, for no charge. On Small Business Saturday, customers can use their American Express cards on this day only, and the first 25 customers who spend $35 or more on this day will receive a free gift from the store.
Windy Knitty: For every $50 spent in the store on Small Business Saturday, Windy Knitty in the Andersonville neighborhood is offering a $5 coupon to be redeemed in the month of February 2016. All that is required is for customers to hold onto their receipts, and the coupon amount will be deducted from the purchase in February upon presentation of the November 28 receipt. Windy Knitty is also participating in Berroco Yarns’ annual holiday promotion, running from Small Business Saturday to New Year’s Eve of this year. Customers who purchase $25 or more of Berroco Yarns will receive a free pattern download from the Berroco pattern store.
Yarns to Dye For: This downtown Frankfort store will be offering several sales incentives, both for their loyal customers and walk-ins who may not have a punch card. On both Black Friday and Small Business Saturday, loyal customers will receive double punches on their punch cards. Also, discounts on total purchases will be given, excluding Addi needles, books, magazines, and items already on Clearance. Customers will receive 10% off purchases up to $25, 15% off purchases up to $50, 20% off purchases up to $100, and 25% off purchases over $100. The discounts will be applied to yarn, accessories, notions, and shawl pins with the above exclusions.
While this is just a partial list, be sure to check your local store’s social media pages and company websites to see deals at other stores.
