Black Diamonds, is a Boston based band of guys under the age of twenty who have been described as an anthem/pop rock band. Yes, that’s right, they are Boston’s newest creation of boy bands, except they’re not. They ROCK! They are a rock and roll band who have been together since they were kids (yes, a few are still pretty young), and have been completely dedicated to this project for more than seven years.
Let’s introduce you to the band: Henry McIntyre is on guitar and 15 years old, Wolfgang on bass is 13 years old, the two old timers (LOL) Nick Calnan on drums and AJ Marks on lead vocals, are both 17 years old.
But, let’s go back to when these guys started in February of 2009. They came together as a band, when the boys were, 7, 8, 10 and 11. (And their curfew was?) They started playing pop and have now developed into a more in your face, good ole rock. When they play covers, it’s with their own spin and originals are included in half their sets. All four guys write their material and include life experiences. Depending on the venue, they could also just play originals.
Don’t think it’s easy with these underage guys who have had to rely on parents to drive them, rearrange family commitments, schedules etc. The band attributes their families cooperation with why they have been successful.
The boys are currently working on their very first EP which will be released in the fall of 2015. They’ve played festivals all over New England, and Canada to Germany. Rehearsals are at the DeAngelis Studio of Music in Haverhill.
Mike DeAngelis is a well known Boston musician who performs as “Slash” in the Guns N Roses Tribute band, Welcome to the Jungle. He has been the band’s manager and driving force from the beginning.
Examiner: Mike, how did these guys come together to form this band?
Mike DeAngelis: These boys met at my music school, DeAngelis Studio, in 2009. All the boys have become the best of friends despite a little age difference. They are truly like brothers, none of them have a brother, only sisters. And they all have other interests outside of music. Wolfgang plays hockey, Henry plays baseball, and AJ loves everything in media arts.
Examiner asked the guys one question for each to answer.
AN: What do you want to be when you grow up?
AJ Marks: I want to be on a worldwide tour with my band mates selling out arenas and putting on one of the most complex and entertaining rock shows ever. And songwriting for the biggest names in the industry, as well as making my own music. Or analyzing chart data as a writer at Billboard. I’d also love to work in television as an actor or a show’s executive producer.
Henry MacIntyre: I want to be playing guitar in a great band with band mates who I love and who make great music. I’d like to create great songs that I love, with meaning and that mean something to people. I’d also like to be playing in places across the world (hopefully in large venues). I’d also love to write about music. It would be great to follow what is happening with bands on the brink of making it big and document their assent to the top. I’d also like to be a music producer or be involved in the music business on some level.
Nick Calnan: I WILL play music for the rest of my life. My goal is to make it somewhere with the Black Diamonds. I want to play all around the world and make music that people will enjoy. If it doesn’t go as planned, I want to start something in the tattoo industry and hopefully run a shop or manage a shop of my own.
Wolfgang: I am mainly a bass player but also play drums, guitar and piano. Playing music in Black Diamonds has allowed us to see parts of Canada and Germany. I and the rest of the band have made many friends playing music. I would love it, to be touring with the band for the rest of my life. If I have to get a real job, maybe when I’m older, I would like to design houses and landscapes.
The band has many upcoming shows in Boston and then back out on the road. Check out their website here: http://www.blackdiamondsband.com/
