Bittersweet, a Washington Park neighborhood fixture with an artisanal approach to handcrafted cuisine has introduced a new summer menu with more options and smaller plates, encouraging more sharing and tasting among guests. Previously, the menu featured 14 items; the updated, expanded menu will feature 18 items and smaller portion sizes, allowing guests to try more dishes from the menu during one dining experience. Rather than separating appetizers from entrees and so on, the menu is divided by the item’s origin – from the garden, from the water or from the field – and all dishes are similar in portion size.
The menu includes small plates From the Garden like the mouth-watering housemade Farfalle pasta with leeks, arugula, smoked blue cheese and a balsamic drizzle. Bittersweet’s own garden is located steps outside the back door which makes the just picked Heirloom Tomato salad with creamy burrata and olives ground into a soil-like consistency an essential now that it’s peak tomato season. The From the Field section of the menu takes you to the heart of the flatlands where you find duck, beef short ribs, hangar steak and wild boar options. The Short Ribs pack a lot of flavor into their little individual short rib packages. The meaty ribs are served with grilled asparagus and pink pickled radishes. The From the Water portion of the menu brings seafood choices for everyone. From the small plates like sword fish carpaccio and ceviche to the grouper and halibut main entrees, enjoy only a bite or a whole dinner from here. The soft grouper packs a flavor punch with a lemon vinaigrette and garden fresh herbs.
In tandem with the new menu, Bittersweet also launched its ‘Thursday Tasting Menu’ in August, comprised of four courses, with wine pairings, and priced at $50 per person. A seasonal tasting menu will be introduced each month, and offered each Thursday. Bittersweet also recently introduced Le Cinq a Sept, a playful take on the traditional Happy Hour experience. Le Cinq a Sept is a French term, translating to the two-hour period after work when some people meet up with their lovers before going home to their spouses. Offered Tuesday through Thursday, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., selections include $5 small plates, $7 signature cocktails and $5 beer and wine.
