May 11th through May 15th is National Bike to Work Week 2015. It is an opportunity to celebrate the power of the bicycle, the many benefits it provides and, best of all, a chance to win a CLIF Bar prize pack!
Commuter bikes come in all shapes and price tags. The Pure Fix Sierra, Pure City Clifton and the Faraday Porteur represent the opposite ends of the commuter bike price and feature spectrum.
The Pure Fix Sierra ($329) is like dipping a toe into an ocean to test the water temperature before diving in.
At $329 it’s easy on the wallet in terms of initial investment and ongoing maintenance.
It’s a fixed-gear bike so there are only points of failure: flat tires or the rare broken chain.
Maintenance on this bike is a breeze. There are no gears and it has one v-brake on the front wheel. YouTube can teach you all you need to know about adjusting the front v-brake and occasionally cleaning the chain.
Pure Fix also sells a cargo rack separately for $40.
If you can spring for a little more luxury and some gears, the Pure City Clifton ($499) is an attractive option. Looks like something you would see in Amsterdam.
On the complete opposite end of the spectrum is the Faraday Porteur ($3,500).
The Faraday Porteur is like diving into an ocean with a neoprene wetsuit and full scuba gear.
It has an electric “power boost” that can help propel you up the steep hill or through the strong headwind that always seems to presents itself at the end of a long and tiring day.
Integrated front and rear lights keep you visible to drivers, an eight-speed internal hub keeps the slush and salt out in the winter months and the Gates belt drive is quiet, grease-free and indestructible.
Recharging the Faraday requires plugging it into any standard wall outlet.
Describe your ride, win a CLIF Bar prize pack!

Want to give it a go? Shoot me an email with a paragraph or two describing your commuter bike.
Is it a fixie like the Pure Fix Sierra? Does it have campy fenders like the Pure City Clifton? Electric assist like the Faraday Porteur?
Do you ride it all year even through the snow, sleet, ice and frigid winter winds or only in the warmer months? Do you maintain regularly or only when something breaks and you have to walk it to the nearest bus stop or bike shop?
Winners will be chosen on May 15th.
